Turn this role into an interview — a resume and cover letter built around what this employer wants.
M8M Pte Ltd is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the development of automation systems. You will oversee concept to deployment, selecting components from multiple manufacturers and driving standardisation for future scalability.
You will collaborate with electrical, controls, and software teams to ensure robust interfaces, while applying DFM/DFA principles to optimise cost and manufacturability.
About the role
Lead the mechanical design and development of automation systems, equipment, and product enhancements, from concept development and detailed design through prototyping, validation, and implementation.
Key responsibilities
Develop system layouts, mechanical assemblies, tooling, fixtures, and automation mechanisms. Select, size, and integrate suitable components from different manufacturers, including industrial and collaborative robotic arms, pneumatic components, electric actuators, motors, and transmission systems.
Drive modular design and component standardisation, developing reusable assemblies and common interfaces to improve design efficiency, simplify customisation, and support maintainability and future expansion.
Review and improve existing designs to enhance performance, reliability, manufacturability, assembly efficiency, and serviceability while optimising costs through Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFM/DFA) principles.
Perform and review engineering calculations, component sizing, tolerance analyses, and simulations where appropriate to assess designs against functional and performance requirements.
Prepare, review, and release detailed part drawings, assembly drawings, bills of materials (BOMs), and engineering documentation in accordance with company approval procedures. Maintain revision control, manage Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), and coordinate implementation with relevant departments.
Plan and lead design reviews, proof-of-concept testing, and validation activities. Assess relevant performance criteria, document findings, and coordinate corrective actions in accordance with project requirements and design approval procedures.
Collaborate closely with electrical, controls, software, and other relevant engineering disciplines to define system interfaces and operating requirements and support integration. Address applicable machine safety requirements, guarding, ergonomics, and maintenance access within the mechanical design scope.
Work with suppliers, procurement, fabrication, and assembly teams to assess manufacturing feasibility, clarify specifications, evaluate component alternatives, and resolve fabrication and assembly issues.
Lead mechanical troubleshooting during assembly, integration, testing, and commissioning. Identify root causes, implement corrective actions, and provide technical support and user training as required.
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and designers. Coordinate mechanical design deliverables, monitor progress, and communicate technical risks, resource requirements, and schedule impacts to the project team.
About you
Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related discipline.
At least 3 years of relevant mechanical design experience in industrial automation, robotic systems, special-purpose machinery, or related mechanical equipment, with demonstrated ability to independently manage mechanical design work from concept through assembly, testing, and implementation.
Strong proficiency in SolidWorks, including part modelling, complex assemblies, detailed engineering drawings, and BOM preparation.
Strong understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals, such as load calculations, actuator and transmission sizing, material selection, fits and tolerances, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
Practical experience selecting and integrating mechanical assemblies, pneumatic components, and electrically driven mechanisms from different manufacturers.
Good knowledge of manufacturing and fabrication processes, such as machining, sheet metal fabrication, welding, surface finishing, and mechanical assembly, with practical application of DFM/DFA principles.
Hands-on experience in mechanical assembly, alignment, mechanism adjustment, prototype testing, and systematic troubleshooting of automation equipment.
Experience managing BOMs, drawing revisions, engineering changes, and technical documentation, with an emphasis on accuracy and design traceability.
Ability to work independently, make sound engineering decisions, lead technical discussions, and provide guidance to junior engineers while collaborating effectively with customers, suppliers, and cross-functional teams.
Self-driven, meticulous, and results-oriented, with strong communication skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities against agreed project timelines and budgets.
