Job description

About Silicon Photonics Business Division

Delta Silicon Photonics Business Division develops world-class silicon photonics chips and solutions that power next-generation sensors and intelligent systems. Our mission is to deliver smarter and safer environments —from machines and infrastructure to everyday life — by translating advanced silicon photonics into real-world impact that benefits people. We are a future-focused, innovative, and entrepreneurial team driven by deep technology expertise, bold execution, and a strong sense of purpose.

What You’ll Be Doing

As a PIC Design Engineer/Scientist, you will design and develop silicon photonic integrated circuits (PICs) for next-generation optical sensing and communication systems. You will work across the full PIC design cycle—from concept and simulation to layout, tape-out, and foundry interaction. Your work will support multiple applications, including FMCW LiDAR, coherent detection, and advanced optical systems. This role is ideal for someone with strong fundamentals in photonics who wants to broaden their impact across device design, integration, and system-level collaboration.

What It’s Like Working With Us

You’ll work in a highly technical, fast-moving environment where problems are complex and solutions are not always predefined. Collaboration is essential across engineering, product, operations, and supply‑chain teams, and progress depends on clear thinking, trust, and ownership. We value curiosity and continuous learning, and we expect team members to be comfortable navigating ambiguity, testing assumptions, and improving through iteration. People here are encouraged to take initiative, learn quickly from both successes and setbacks, and shape how work gets done.

Key Responsibilities

  • PIC Design & Device Development:Design and optimize silicon photonic components such as waveguides, splitters, couplers, phase shifters, modulators, and photodetectors.

  • Simulation & Performance Modeling:Perform optical, electro‑optic, and thermal simulations to predict device performance and guide design decisions.

  • Layout & Tape‑out:Create and verify PIC layouts using industry‑standard tools and Python‑based flows; drive DRC/LVS sign‑off and full‑mask tape‑outs with foundry partners.

  • Foundry & PDK Collaboration:Work with silicon photonics foundries to adopt and customize PDK components, design rules, and process control monitors.

  • Testing & Characterization Support:Define test structures and collaborate with test engineers on wafer‑level and package‑level optical/electrical characterization.

  • Cross‑Functional Integration:Partner with system architects, packaging engineers, and electronics teams to ensure PIC designs meet system‑level requirements for performance, reliability, and manufacturability.

  • Documentation & Best Practices:Maintain clear design documentation, simulation records, and reusable design methodologies.

Qualifications

  • Education:Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Photonics, Optics, Physics, Materials Science, or a related discipline.

  • Experience:3+ years of relevant experience in silicon photonics, integrated photonics, optoelectronics, or optical communication. Candidates with strong academic project experience may also be considered.

  • Technical Expertise:

  • Solid understanding of silicon photonics device physics and fabrication processes.

  • Hands‑on experience with photonic simulation tools (e.g., Lumerical, COMSOL, CST, or equivalent).

  • Experience with PIC layout tools (e.g., Cadence Virtuoso, KLayout, GDSFactory) and Python scripting.

  • Familiarity with foundry PDKs, DRC/LVS, and tape‑out flows.

  • Programming skills in Python and/or MATLAB for modeling, automation, and data analysis.

  • Nice to Have:

  • Experience with FMCW LiDAR, coherent detection, high-speed modulators, hybrid III-V/Si lasers, or advanced packaging.

  • Background in optical system link budget or signal integrity analysis.

  • Soft Skills:Strong analytical thinking, clear communication, and the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
