Job summary

A*STAR – Agency for Science, Technology and Research, through its TCOMS division, invites applications for a PhD-level researcher in Marine & Offshore Engineering. You will tackle fluid-structure interactions and develop AI-assisted modelling for near real-time predictions.

Applicants should hold a PhD in Civil, Mechanical, Marine or Ocean Engineering and have strong skills in hydrodynamics, CFD, and data-driven methods.

Qualifications

• PhD in Civil, Mechanical, Marine or Ocean Engineering or related disciplines.
• Strong background in marine hydrodynamics, ocean and coastal engineering.
• Experience with numerical methods and software such as SolidWorks, WAMIT, ANSYS, CFD tools.
• Experience leading projects involving Generative AI, deep learning and data-driven predictions.

Responsibilities

• Perform research in fluid-structure interactions relevant to Marine & Offshore Engineering.
• Develop AI-assisted modelling with data assimilation using ML and physics-based simulations.
• Assist in physical model tests, field experiments, numerical simulations and ML model development.
• Collaborate with industry partners and research institutes to contribute to grants and proposals.
• Any other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Job description

Responsibilities

• Perform research in the following areas:
  • Fluid (wind/wave/current) – structure interactions relevant to Marine & Offshore Engineering.
  • Physics-informed and data-driven modelling with data assimilation using machine learning / Artificial Intelligence (AI) and physics-based simulations.
  • Reduced-order modelling to speed up computation and achieve near real-time predictions.
• Assist in performing physical model tests, field experiments, numerical simulations and machine learning / AI models development to support the development of AI-assisted tools and products.
• Collaborate with industry partners, affiliated research institutes and other relevant stakeholders to contribute to grant and business proposals consistent with the strategic goals of TCOMS.
• Any other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications & Field of Study

• PhD Degree from reputable universities in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Ocean Engineering, or other related disciplines.

Work Experience

• Preferably having relevant research/industry experience with competent knowledge in some of the following areas:
  • Marine engineering, hydrodynamics, ocean engineering and coastal engineering.
• Prior knowledge in the following numerical methods/software/programming languages will be an advantage:
  • CAD software such as SolidWorks, Rhino, AutoCAD.
  • Potential flow tools such as WAMIT, SESAM, OrcaFlex, and ANSYS.
  • CFD software such as StarCCM+ and OpenFOAM.
  • Programming codes such as FORTRAN, Python, MATLAB, C++ or equivalent.
• Strong track records and experience in leading projects involving Generative AI, Deep Learning and Data Driven Predictions in the domain of Marine & Offshore.
