Qualifications

• Medical staff who completed basic specialist training and have a recognized postgraduate qualification.
• Must be registered with the Singapore Medical Council, and completed 1 year of housemanship and 3 years medical officer posting.

Responsibilities

• Oversee ward care and day-to-day ward operations.
• Supervise and teach House Officers, Medical Officers and Trainees.
• See cold referrals and urgent referrals during night duty.
• Inform on-call Consultant of difficult or complex cases.
• Perform night ward rounds and after-hours duties as required.
• Prepare Confidential Mortality Reports for hospital medical board.
• Represent ward in coroner's inquests or medico-legal hearings as needed.
• Attend departmental rounds and teaching seminars.
• In surgical disciplines, assist in elective and emergency operations and supervise junior staff.
• Teach Medical Officers basic operative procedures.
• Pursue ongoing specialty knowledge and professional development.
• Perform other duties as directed by Head of Department or Chairman Medical Board.

Senior Resident Physician / Resident Physician Medical

Overview

Resident Physicians and Senior Resident Physicians are experienced doctors with a recognized postgraduate qualification and who have completed the 3-year basic postgraduate specialist training. They are expected to undertake considerable responsibilities in addition to those of Medical and House Officers.

Job Responsibilities

• Responsible for the overall supervision and day-to-day running of the wards, including patient care. Shall demonstrate good diagnostic and clinical management acumen.
• Responsible for the supervision and teaching of House Officers, Medical Officers and Trainees.
• See all cold referrals not specially referred to any consultant by name.
• Responsible for seeing urgent referrals while on night duty.
• Inform the Consultant on call of all difficult and complex cases that are admitted into the ward or referred for an opinion.
• Expected to do ward rounds at night and outside of office hours when on call and during admitting nights.
• In emergency situations and outside of office hours, Resident Physicians and Senior Resident Physicians may also oversee the write out and sign all consultation referral letters.
• Responsible for the compilation of Confidential Mortality Reports for submission to the Chairman Medical Board through the Head of Department.
• A Resident Physician or Senior Resident Physician in charge of a ward may also represent the ward or hospital at Coroner's inquests or medico-legal hearings involving patients in his/her particular ward.
• Expected to attend and participate in all departmental ward rounds including the combined Hospital teaching seminars, clinic-pathological case conference etc.
• In surgical disciplines, Resident Physicians and Senior Resident Physicians have additional duties of carrying out elective and emergency operations to the level of complexity permitted by senior staff of the department.
• Resident Physicians and Senior Resident Physicians of surgical disciplines should teach
• Medical Officers basic operative procedures and guide them when necessary
• Resident Physicians and Senior Resident Physicians shall possess specialty knowledge and show enthusiasm in improving knowledge.
• Perform any other duties as directed by Head of Department or the Chairman Medical Board of the hospital.
• May be required to perform the duties of the next lower grade, if necessary.
