Qualifications

  • Graduates with academic training in macroeconomics, international economics, monetary economics, financial markets, econometrics, quantitative methods, or statistical analysis will be viewed favourably.
  • Strong interest in Asian economies, foreign exchange markets, economic policy, international trade, and global financial markets.

Responsibilities

  • Support the preparation of market updates and research publications, including economic commentary, presentation materials, charts and briefing notes for internal stakeholders, senior management and clients.
  • Monitor and analyse economic, geopolitical and financial market developments across Asia, assessing their potential implications for economic growth, monetary policy, foreign exchange markets, supply chain and investment sentiment.
  • Maintain and analyse economic and financial databases, ensuring data accuracy, timely updates and effective use of information to support research projects and market analysis.
  • Conduct research on key themes affecting Asian economies and financial markets, including macroeconomic trends, monetary policy, trade developments, geopolitical events and foreign exchange market dynamics.
  • Respond to research requests from internal business units and clients, gathering relevant information and supporting the delivery of timely and accurate insights.
  • Collaborate with research, sales and trading teams across Asia and Frankfurt, contributing to discussions, sharing market observations and supporting the team's research objectives.

Job description

Job purpose:

The Research Intern supports the Asia Economics and FXResearch team in monitoring and analysing macroeconomic, financial market, policy, and political developments across Asia. The role contributes to research on how these developments may affect economic growth, inflation, interest rates, exchange rates, financial markets, and policy decisions.

The intern will support research requirements from the Asia and Frankfurt research teams, senior management, internal business units, and clients. The role provides practical exposure to economic research, financial market analysis, data management, and the preparation of written and presentation materials.

Key activities:
  • Support the preparation of market updates and research publications, including economic commentary, presentation materials, charts and briefing notes for internal stakeholders, senior management and clients.

Formal education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Finance, Econometrics, Statistics, Mathematics, Public Policy, International Relations or a related discipline.
  • Graduates with academic training in macroeconomics, international economics, monetary economics, financial markets, econometrics, quantitative methods, or statistical analysis will be viewed favourably.
  • Strong academic interest in Asian economies, foreign exchange markets, economic policy, international trade, and global financial markets.
Specialist knowledge (work experience, further qualification):
  • Open to fresh graduates and candidates with up to 1 year of relevant experience in economic research, financial markets, data analysis, public policy, or related fields. Prior internship, academic research, or market-related experience would be advantageous.
  • Strong interest in macroeconomics, Asian economies, foreign exchange markets, global value chain and financial market developments, with the ability to interpret economic data and assess their implications for markets and policy.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and data analysis, including the ability to work with large datasets, identify trends, and present findings in a clear and structured manner. Knowledge of CEIC and other economic or financial databases would be advantageous.
  • Good knowledge of AI tools and digital research techniques, with the ability to utilise them responsibly to support research, information gathering, data analysis, report writing, presentation preparation, and productivity-related tasks, while exercising sound judgement to validate sources, outputs, and conclusions.
