Job description

Research Fellow (Soft Electronics and Wearable Systems), DID
Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated Research Fellow to join our lab in exploring the design, development, and applications of intelligent textiles and soft electronics. Our research integrates material science, digital fabrication, hardware systems, artificial intelligence, and computational design to advance smart textiles and wearable systems for various applications, including health and well-being, human-computer interaction, robotics, interactive media, and immersive environments.

We are looking for candidates specializing in the following topics:

Soft/Textile Electronics
  • Research and develop flexible and soft electronics for integration into textiles, wearables, and electronic skin, including tactile sensors, actuation, and haptic devices.
  • Advance digital knitting, weaving, embroidery, sewing, and other textile-based fabrication techniques.
  • Characterize and evaluate electromechanical properties of soft systems.
  • Use simulation tools for design and modeling.
  • Implement and test developed devices for various applications.
Embedded Systems & Hardware Development
  • Design and develop miniaturized hardware systems for seamless integration of sensors, actuators/haptics, and computing into textiles and wearables.
  • Develop and optimize embedded systems, including firmware development.
  • Implement and test wireless and wired communication for distributed networks.
  • Apply AI/ML and deep learning techniques for analyzing dense multimodal data in real time.
  • Integrate system-level solutions for interfacing with computers, smartphones, or AR/VR technologies.

Candidates with expertise spanning both topics are highly encouraged to apply. They will collaborate across art, design, science, and engineering disciplines, contributing to cutting-edge prototypes, installations, performances, and innovations that bridge human, material, machine, and environment at various scales, from body to architecture, individual to societal.

Qualifications

Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in a relevant engineering and design field (electrical engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering, material science, industrial design, media arts) and meet some of the qualifications based on their specialization:

  • Experience in soft electronics, printed electronics, or flexible hybrid electronics or textile-based integration (knitting, weaving, embroidery, etc.).
  • Proficiency in soft device simulation and characterization.
  • Strong programming skills in C/C++, C#, Python, microcontroller, or AR/VR development.
  • Proficiency in PCB design tools and experience in miniaturized hardware design and wireless system integration.
  • Background in AI/ML for generative design, data analysis, or pattern recognition.
  • A great portfolio and publication record in areas related to soft technologies, human-computer interaction, wearable computing, or immersive environments.
Attributes
  • Independent, creative, and motivated with an interest for unconventional and experimental applications. Passionate in merging functionality with aesthetic sensibility.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
