Job description

Join Our Team at the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

The School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (SPMS) at NTU Singapore hosts research and education activities in two divisions: Division of Mathematical Sciences (MAS) and Division of Physics and Applied Physics (PAP). MAS covers diverse topics ranging from pure mathematics to the applications of mathematics in cryptography, computing, business, and finance. PAP covers many areas of fundamental and applied physics, including quantum information, condensed matter physics, biophysics, and photonics. Over the years, SPMS has attracted talented individuals from around the world and Singapore to join as scientific leaders and researchers.

Position Available: Research Fellow, Plasma Physics for Fusion Energy

Key Responsibilities

The project aims to assess impurity transport under different plasma turbulence regimes, as well as the effects of plasma shaping. The Research Fellow will be employed and based at NTU, and is expected to travel overseas to collaborate with scientific teams at CEA, France.

The holder will:

  • Investigate plasma turbulence in tokamak core plasmas to understand and optimise its role in maximizing fusion performance
  • Analyse the linear and nonlinear dynamics of key micro-instabilities to identify the fundamental physical mechanisms governing turbulent transport
  • Develop, apply, and benchmark gyrokinetic models to study cross-field transport and its dependence on plasma parameters and operating scenarios
  • Collaborate with international partners to compare modelling approaches, share datasets, and integrate results into broader fusion research programmes
Job Requirements
  • PhD degree in physics
  • Demonstrated experience in scientific computing, including programming, numerical modelling, and use of HPC environments
  • Proven ability to manage and analyse large-scale datasets from simulations or experiments
  • Solid background in theoretical physics, with at least foundational knowledge of plasma physics
  • Documented track record of scientific productivity, such as publications or conference contributions
  • Experience working in an international research environment, with strong communication and collaboration skills

The College of Science seeks a diverse and inclusive workforce and is committed to equality of opportunity. We welcome applications from all and recruit on the basis of merit, regardless of age, race, gender, religion, marital status and family responsibilities, or disability.
