Research Associates /Research Fellows /Senior Research Fellows (Machine Learning/Probabilistic Programming/AI Safety)

The candidate will work in Prof Ong’s Research Group, where cutting-edge research is carried out on a wide range of topics ranging across programming language (especially Bayesian statistical probabilistic programming), statistical machine learning, generative AI, and AI Safety.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage own academic research and administrative activities. This involves small scale project management, to co-ordinate multiple aspects of work to meet deadlines.
  • Carry out original research, including adapting existing and developing new mathematical models, scientific techniques and experimental protocols, and building software tools and carrying out empirical studies where appropriate.
  • Write, publish and disseminate results, including give research presentations at meetings.
  • Contribute and develop ideas for new research projects and for generating research income, and present detailed research proposals to senior researchers
  • Act as a source of information and advice to other members of the group on scientific protocols and experimental techniques.
  • Represent the research group at external meetings / seminars, either with other members of the group or alone.
  • Assist the PI in mentoring, supervising and coordinating the activities of junior researchers and students of the research project.
  • Assist the PI in research collaboration and coordinating activities with project partners and collaborators from other institutions.
  • Work with industry and government partners to understand their research needs and formulate solutions.
  • Contribute to outreach, communications and reporting as required to funders and stakeholders. Represent the research group at external meetings/seminars, either with other members of the group or alone.
  • Help organise and actively participate in regular meetings and seminars within the group.
  • Assist in raising research funds through grant applications.
  • The postholder may have the opportunity to teach. This may include lecturing, small-group teaching, and tutoring of undergraduates and graduate students.

Job Requirements:

Essential Criteria

  • Candidates must have a PhD (or be near completion) in Computer Science or Mathematics or Statistics with a strong background in one or more of the following: AI, machine learning, Bayesian statistics, programming languages, logic and algorithms, formal methods, probability and measure theory
  • For senior research fellow role, candidates must hold a relevant PhD with significant track record of research excellence and substantial research leadership experience
  • Strong publication record and familiarity with the existing literature and research in the field of statistical machine learning, and deep learning or large language models.
  • Possess sufficient specialist knowledge, research skills and interests in statistical machine learning, and deep learning or large language models to work within established research programmes and contribute ideas and solutions.
  • Ability to independently plan and manage a research project, including a research budget.
  • Possess strong collaboration abilities in person, on paper and over electronic channels.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write for publication, present research proposals and results, and represent the research group at meetings.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience of supervising staff.
  • Experience of managing a research budget.
  • Ability to raise research funds through making grant applications.
