The National Institute of Education invites applications for a Research Associate (Data Management Specialist) position on a 2-year contract at the Office for Research.

Position Overview:

We seek a proactive, detail-oriented Research Data Management (RDM) Specialist to join the Research-Practice-Policy Group (RPPG). The role involves building a robust data curation service, providing expert data curation for research projects, and enhancing the quality, integrity, and reusability of research data. The position requires collaboration with research teams to solve metadata documentation challenges and promote best practices in RDM throughout the research lifecycle.

Qualifications and Skills:
Required Qualifications:
  • A Master's degree in Information Science, Library Science, social sciences with a data focus, or related fields.
  • At least 2 years of experience in research data management, curation, or stewardship within academic or research settings.
  • Experience with quantitative or mixed-methods research data and familiarity with software like SPSS, Stata.
  • Knowledge of metadata standards (e.g., DDI) and data documentation best practices.
Essential Skills and Competencies:
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency with data documentation tools (experience with Colectica preferred), data cleaning, and anonymization techniques.
  • Analytical Skills: Strong problem-solving skills, ability to work with ambiguous data, and diagnose complex dataset issues.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to collaborate with researchers, build trust, and navigate priorities diplomatically.
  • Organizational Skills: Meticulous management of information and workflows, producing high-quality documentation.
  • Initiative: Ability to work independently, manage projects, and proactively address challenges.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Data Curation: Clean, anonymize, and enhance research datasets; create detailed metadata and codebooks using tools like Colectica Designer.
  • Collaborate with Researchers: Act as a primary contact for Principal Investigators, attend meetings, and support data management needs.
  • Process Development: Implement and improve Data Curation SOPs and RDM Toolkit based on new insights.
  • Needs Analysis: Identify and resolve data issues such as inconsistencies and gaps in documentation.
  • Tool Support: Manage data documentation software and evaluate new tools for workflow enhancement.
  • Advocacy and Training: Promote RDM resources and guide researchers on best practices.
  • Reporting: Document curation activities and prepare reports to improve services.
  • Additional Duties: Support the Office for Research and RPPG as assigned.
