Job summary

NTU Singapore's School of Humanities invites applications for a full-time Research Associate in Linguistics to support the MOE SSHR Thematic Grant project, Singapore Mandarin Usage Dictionary. The appointee will conduct literature reviews, corpus-based analyses, and cross-varietal comparisons, working closely with the project team.

• Master’s degree in Linguistics, Chinese Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Corpus Linguistics, Lexicography, or related field.
• Strong training in Chinese linguistic analysis (lexis, semantics, syntax, pragmatics, language variation, corpus linguistics, or lexicography).
• High level of proficiency in written and spoken Chinese and English to support the project.
• Experience in corpus-based research, linguistic annotation, lexical analysis, dictionary compilation, or related language research.

Responsibilities

• Provide linguistic input for annotation and computational modelling; interpret corpus and model outputs.
• Coordinate annotation and quality assurance; maintain research documentation; guide student assistants.
• Contribute to project reports, publications, presentations, and other research activities.
• Collaborate with PI, Co-PIs, computational researchers, and project collaborators.

We are looking for a full-time Research Associate in Linguistics to support the MOE SSHR Thematic Grant project, Singapore Mandarin Usage Dictionary. The Research Associate will be a core member of the project team and will independently conduct literature review, linguistic analysis, corpus-based research, and cross-varietal comparison.

Key Responsibilities

The role will involve providing linguistic input for annotation and computational modelling, interpreting corpus and model outputs, and using these findings to design, draft, and refine dictionary entries. The Research Associate will also coordinate annotation and quality assurance, maintain research documentation, guide student assistants, and contribute to project reports, publications, presentations, and other research activities. The appointee will work independently while collaborating closely with the PI, Co-PIs, computational researchers, and project collaborators.

Job Requirements

• Master’s degree in Linguistics, Chinese Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Corpus Linguistics, Lexicography, or a related field
• Strong training in Chinese linguistic analysis, particularly in areas such as lexis, semantics, syntax, pragmatics, language variation, corpus linguistics, or lexicography
• High level of proficiency in written and spoken Chinese and English so as to support the technical components of the Grant project, Singapore Mandarin Usage Dictionary
• Experience in corpus-based research, linguistic annotation, lexical analysis, dictionary compilation, or related language research
• Ability to independently analyze linguistic data, interpret corpus and computational findings, and produce clear research outputs
• Strong analytical, writing, organizational, and quality assurance skills
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively and to guide student assistants
• Familiarity with Singapore Mandarin, other Mandarin varieties, Chinese dialects, multilingualism, corpus tools, or annotation platforms would be an advantage to support the technical components of the Grant project, Singapore Mandarin Usage Dictionary
