The Role

The Sustainable and Green Finance Institute (SGFIN) is a new university-level research institute at the National University of Singapore (NUS), supported by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and NUS. SGFIN aims to develop expertise in sustainable and green finance, provide thought leadership, and influence sustainability outcomes across the financial sector and economy.

This role is ideal for individuals interested in academic or industry research in the financial sector, focusing on sustainable, responsible, and green investing and valuation. Responsibilities include designing frameworks to analyze corporate sustainability efforts and performance to aid decision-making across corporate, financial, and societal domains.

There are no teaching duties, and the candidate will have opportunities to expand their research portfolio.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Design research projects collaboratively with the Institute’s Directors (Prof. Sumit Agarwal, A.Prof Johan Sulaeman, A.Prof Weina Zhang) and research affiliates.
  • Ensure the successful delivery of research projects within deadlines and budgets, meeting or exceeding targets.
  • Identify resources and prepare high-level project plans, including staffing and timelines.
  • Develop research hypotheses.
  • Collect and organize data on corporate financials, sustainability disclosures, and government policies/regulations.
  • Analyze existing frameworks and develop comprehensive new frameworks through qualitative and quantitative methods.
  • Monitor project progress and intervene as necessary to ensure timely completion.
  • Manage project deliverables for quality and consistency.
  • Coordinate with research and industry stakeholders, providing progress updates and managing expectations.
  • Prepare results for industry communications, presentations, and academic publications.
  • For Research Fellow: mentor and supervise research analysts and associates.
  • Collaborate with the SGFIN team to support institutional objectives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, accounting, business, sustainable/green finance, or related fields; a master’s degree is preferred, and a PhD is required for the Research Fellow role.
  • Basic understanding of the financial sector, markets, corporate financial statements, and credit risk analysis.
  • Preferred: expertise in sustainable economics or finance.
  • Strong quantitative and econometric skills, experience with statistical software, and empirical research methods.
  • Proactive problem solver with excellent time management and planning skills.
  • Proven project management and delivery skills, capable of managing multiple projects.
  • Flexible, positive attitude, self-driven, and initiative-taking.
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills, both verbal and written.
