The Role

The Sustainable and Green Finance Institute (SGFIN) is a new university-level research institute in the National University of Singapore (NUS), jointly supported by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and NUS. SGFIN aims to develop deep research capabilities in sustainable and green finance, provide thought leadership in the sustainability space, and influence sustainability outcomes across the financial sector and the economy.

This role is ideal for individuals interested in academic or industry research in the financial sector, particularly in portfolio allocation and stock selection. Responsibilities include designing frameworks to evaluate corporate investment decisions and project valuations.

There are no teaching obligations, and the candidate will have the opportunity to develop their research portfolio.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Design research projects in collaboration with the Institute’s Directors (Prof. Sumit Agarwal, A.Prof Johan Sulaeman, A.Prof Weina Zhang) and Research Affiliates.
  • Take ownership of research projects, ensuring timely completion within budget and meeting specifications.
  • Participate in pre-project activities, including resource identification and high-level planning.
  • Develop research hypotheses.
  • Plan and develop valuation frameworks and analytical tools linking stock market and corporate information.
  • Contribute to fundamental valuation models considering various business activities.
  • Monitor research progress and intervene as needed to ensure smooth completion.
  • Manage and coordinate project deliverables, maintaining quality.
  • Manage industry partner expectations by understanding their needs and setting realistic scopes.
  • Collaborate with research and industry stakeholders, providing progress updates and deliverables for funding bodies or sponsors.
  • Prepare results for industry communications, presentations, and academic publications.
  • Guide and mentor research associates and analysts.
  • Support SGFIN’s activities and objectives alongside the team.

Requirements

  • Academic background in finance, economics, accounting, business, strategy, or related fields. A bachelor’s degree is required; a master’s is preferred; a PhD is required for the Research Fellow position.
  • Basic understanding of the financial sector, markets, corporate financial statements, and credit risk analysis.
  • Knowledge of asset pricing, portfolio investments, and corporate valuations is highly preferred.
  • Quantitative and econometric skills, with experience in empirical and theoretical research, are highly desirable.
  • Good time management and planning skills.
  • Strong project management experience, capable of managing multiple projects.
  • Proven track record of delivering projects on time.
  • Adaptability, positive attitude, and self-motivation.
  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills.
