Job description

Job Summary

The Radiographer will be responsible for performing in one or more of the following imaging procedures; X-Ray, Fluoroscopy, Mammography, Computer Tomography, Bone Mineral Densitometry, Magnetic Resonance imaging procedures as per his/her professional training in the imaging techniques, with knowledge and skill in the use of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation.

Deliverables & Responsibilities

Operations & Clinical

• To perform diagnostic imaging procedures on patients as requested by referring clinicians and to assist the clinical aspect of the Centre's business.

• Be clinically competent in the range of diagnostic imaging services he/she is trained in, and offered by the Centre.

• Perform all diagnostic procedures in accordance with clinically accepted standards described in the SOP and relevant work instructions.

• To perform imaging procedures

o Accurately, as per clinical request and to patients’ clinical needs.

o Expeditiously, with attention to patient comfort and Radiation Safety.

o Of Diagnostic relevance for the Radiologist to report.

• Registered imaging requests with the accompanying folder and payment advice form will be place within the respective modality assigned wall slots, from which Radiographers will pick for imaging.

• Select patient to be imaged from the modality worklist on the imaging equipment.

• Ensure that all imaging procedures are performed on the correct patient with regard to the identification and due observance of the relevant policy on irradiation of women of child bearing age and procedural consent. Ensure imaging is done on the correct patient, with correct imaging procedure and technique used. Acquire images with the highest possible image quality with the available imaging equipments used. Acquired images are to be sent to PACs for archive.

• Radiographers are to check and ensure that patients are deemed suitable for the procedure, paying attention to possibility of patient being pregnant when scheduled for X-Ray procedures or the risk of drug allergy.

• Ensure printed films are of optimal quality, in terms of zoom factor, window/width and level. All films are to be correctly labeled and in accordance to the imaging procedure requested, before sending to the Radiologist for reporting or given to patient as wet-film.

• All Radiographers are to START and END each imaging procedure in ERIS.

• Assist in advising and explaining to patients of any additional charges, and to indicate by writing down the additional charges for additional scan/contrast on the Payment Advice Form.

• Instruct all patients to bring the payment advice form to the front counter.

• Give patients appropriate instruction after imaging procedure; To wait for wet-films, to leave after payment, to go back to the clinic etc.

• Assume responsibilities and commitments for the day-to-day operations of the imaging unit in the department.

• Actively seek continual self-education to keep abreast with all new imaging technology, procedures and applications.

Patient Care & Public Relation Skills

• To co-operate and work hand-in-hand between Front Office staff and Nurses to ensure patients expeditiously turnaround for the imaging procedure. Work closely with other sections to co-ordinate patient appointments in such a manner as to minimize patient waiting time at the Centre.

• Assist to position patients for CT and MR when there is an absence or shortage of Nurses.

• Provide clear and simple explanation to the patient for each imaging procedure and the estimated duration of the procedure to ally their anxiety and to gain his/her cooperation.

• Provide adequate reassurance whenever appropriate.

• Ensure the safety, physical and emotional well-being of patients both during and after imaging procedure.

• Handle all patients in a polite and emphatic manner.

• Ensure that all patient and clinician complaints are resolved in an amicable manner whenever possible.

• Consult the Radiologist whenever in doubt about any aspect of the requested imaging procedure, so as to minimize incidents of having to recall patients for repeat procedures or additions views.

• Organize the workflow of the examination room so as to enable all procedures to be performed efficiently thereby minimizing the patients' waiting time in the Centre.

Other Essential Management Tasks

• Ensure to comply with the relevant policies and procedures and report to the center Manager any serious breach of the same.

• Report to the Centre Manager and document any unusual events or incidents which have occurred at the Centre that could potentially result in an official investigation in compliance with the relevant incident reporting policy.

• Protect the confidentiality of all company proprietary information and patient record per relevant confidentiality policy.

Patient Safety & Radiation Protection

• Ensure and perform proper screening procedure for patients undergoing MRI examinations to ascertain that they are not contraindicated for such procedures.

• Take all precautions to protect patients, staff and members of the public from unnecessary exposure to ionizing radiation.

• Be familiar with the recommendations of ICRP with regard to radiation protection and take all necessary steps to ensure compliance.

• Ensure that personal radiation monitoring devices are worn by all radiographers when working with imaging equipments which emits ionizing radiation and the timely renewal of their radiation licenses.

• Ensure and obtain a written consent for all patients undergoing imaging procedures with the administration of intravenous/intramuscular/intracavity/intraarticular administration of contrast media and maintain proper records for such documents for future reference.

Care of Equipment & Quality Control

• Ensure and perform daily QA procedures for the imaging equipment to maintain the consistently optimal performance of such equipment.

• Be familiar with the guidelines set out in the center’s Standard Operating Policies and Standard Operating Procedures and comply with them.

• Understand the relevant service culture of the center and values which apply to staff.

• Report to the Senior Clinical Manager of any unusual event or incident that occurred in the center according to relevant policy.

• Protect the confidentiality of all company proprietary information and patient records

• Inform the Senior Clinical Manager, company’s IT manager and the respective vendors' service representatives of any irregularities and breakdown in the performance of the equipment hardware/software.

• Maintain an equipment logbook for each examination room and ensure that all radiographers document all equipment problems, downtime and action taken to rectify such problems in the respective log books.

• Ensure and undertake to maintain the cleanliness and aesthetic appearance of the assigned examination room(s) and perform daily cleaning of the exposed surfaces of the equipment (especially areas in contact with the patient).

• To arrange and coordinate the Preventive Maintenance for all diagnostic equipment

Responsibility & Accountable for the following

• Understand all aspects of Diagnostic Imaging Modalities including Nuclear Medicine and PET imaging and be able to assist in all applicable imaging procedures.

• Assists the Senior Clinical Manager in developing short- and long-term goals and action plan for the unit.

• Able to perform all general radiographic and special fluoroscopic examinations offered by the Centre with a repeat rate of less than 5% (due to human error).

• Able to perform all examinations offered by the Centre in at least one other specialized modality (e.g. MRI, CT. Mammography and Ultrasound).

• To protect the safety and well-being of patients and staff when carrying out all diagnostic imaging procedures.

• To ensure all patients are attended to promptly and efficiently.

• To ensure the proper care and maintenance of all imaging equipment.

• To be responsible for maintaining the quality standards for medical imaging as specified in the RDIS Quality Assurance Plan.

• Performs any other reasonable duties as directed by the Clinical Manager/Chief Radiographer from time to time.

• To perform and undertake any assignment or ad-hoc tasks delegated by Manager from time to time.

Requirements

Qualifications

• Possesses a Diploma of the College of Radiographers, UK (DCR, UK) or a Diploma in Radiography from Nanyang Polytechnic, Singapore, and/or a Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Science (Radiography) from a reputable academic institution.

• Member of the Singapore Society of Radiographers and/or other local or overseas related professional bodies.

• Minimum of 2 years’ working experience as a radiographer in a hospital-based diagnostic imaging facility.

• Prior experience in managing a section in a hospital-based radiology department (i.e. A&E, Women’s Imaging, Advanced Imaging etc.)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Preferably possesses subspecialty experience in one or more of the following modalities:

o CT

o MRI

o Ultrasound

o Mammography
