My client is seeking a highly skilled Propulsion Control Engineer to join their team. In this critical role, you will be responsible for ensuring the optimal performance, reliability, and efficiency of propulsion control systems on various marine vessels. This involves a blend of hands-on technical work, diagnostic expertise, and direct customer interaction, often in challenging operational environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Diagnostics & Troubleshooting:
Perform comprehensive on-site and remote diagnostics of Wärtsilä propulsion control systems, including automation, electrical, electronic, and software components.
Conduct root cause analysis for system malfunctions and implement effective corrective actions to restore optimal functionality.
Address issues related to engine control, propeller pitch, thruster operation, and integrated bridge systems. - Installation & Commissioning:
Execute the installation, commissioning, and testing of new Wärtsilä propulsion control systems during new build projects or retrofits.
Ensure seamless integration with other vessel systems and adherence to design specifications and classification society rules. - Maintenance & Upgrades:
Carry out scheduled preventive maintenance, corrective repairs, and system upgrades on Wärtsilä propulsion control equipment.
Implement software updates, parameter adjustments, and hardware replacements as required to enhance system performance and extend lifecycle. - Customer Support & Training:
Provide expert technical guidance and support to vessel crew and customer personnel on the operation and basic maintenance of Wärtsilä propulsion control systems.
Document service activities thoroughly, including findings, actions taken, and recommendations for future maintenance or improvements. - Quality & Safety Assurance:
Adhere strictly to Wärtsilä's safety protocols, quality standards, and environmental regulations during all service operations.
Contribute to continuous improvement by providing feedback on product performance and service processes. - Travel:
Willingness and ability to travel extensively, often on short notice, to various ports, shipyards, and offshore locations globally to support customer needs.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics, Marine Engineering, or a related technical field
- Relevant diplomas with extensive, proven experience in marine control systems will also be considered
- Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience in the installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and maintenance of marine propulsion control and automation systems
- Prior field service experience in the maritime industry is essential
- Strong understanding of PLC programming (e.g., Siemens, Allen-Bradley, or proprietary systems), HMI configuration, and industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet)
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting electrical schematics, P&ID diagrams, and technical drawings
- Knowledge of variable frequency drives (VFDs), sensors, actuators, and marine electrical systems
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a methodical approach to troubleshooting
- Valid passport and ability to travel internationally without restrictions
