Job summary

The National University of Singapore IT division is seeking a Product Design Lead to shape the end-to-end user experience across its portfolio of digital products, including AI-enabled applications. You will own the Design System, mentor Product Designers and UI/UX Designers, and collaborate with Product Managers and engineers to drive design excellence and adoption across NUS IT.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Design, CS, IS, Psychology, Communications or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
8-12+ years of experience in product design, UX/UI design, interaction design or related field.
Strong portfolio demonstrating end-to-end product design across complex digital products and services.
Strong experience in user research, usability testing, interaction design, prototyping and visual design.
Good understanding of the commercial AI product landscape, including AI products and platforms.
Experience designing AI-enabled products and familiarity with AI interaction patterns.
Experience establishing or evolving design systems and reusable design patterns.
Experience working with Product Managers and engineers in cross-functional product teams.
Experience leading and developing designers and establishing strong design practices and standards.

What You Do

As the Product Design Lead, you are responsible for shaping the end-to-end user experience across NUS IT's portfolio of digital products and services, spanning both AI-enabled and traditional applications.

Reporting directly to the Head of Enterprise Services, you lead Product Design as a cross-functional capability, providing design leadership across product teams and developing Product Designers and UI/UX Designers supporting different NUS IT teams.

At the core of your role, you own how users experience and interact with our digital products and services. You also own and evolve the NUS IT Design System, while building Product Design as an organisational capability through strong design practices, standards and people development.

Key responsibilities

1. Product Experience & Interaction Design

Own the end-to-end user experience across NUS IT's digital products and services, spanning both AI-enabled and traditional applications.
Lead user journeys and flows, prototyping, visual design and interaction design from concept through delivery.
Design intuitive AI experiences, including conversational interfaces, human-in-the-loop interactions and other emerging ways for users to interact effectively with AI.
Stay abreast of leading commercial AI products and platforms, assessing their features, capabilities and user experience to inform the design and evolution of NUS IT's own AI products and services.

2. Design System Ownership & Adoption

Own and continuously evolve the NUS IT Design System, ensuring it remains aligned with wider NUS IT branding efforts, accessibility standards and evolving industry practices.
Drive adoption of the Design System across new and existing digital products, providing reusable components, patterns and guidance that enable teams to design and build consistent user experiences.
Govern the consistent application of the Design System across products, working with designers and engineering teams to address gaps, incorporate new requirements and maintain quality as the system evolves.

3. User Research & Experience Insights

Build a deep understanding of user needs, behaviours and pain points through user research, usability testing, feedback and product insights.
Translate these insights into opportunities to improve products and user experiences.
Establish strong feedback loops between users, Product Managers and engineering teams to ensure product development remains grounded in user needs.

4. Design Leadership & Capability Building

Lead, mentor and develop Product Designers and UI/UX Designers across NUS IT, providing design direction across relevant product initiatives.
Establish product design practices, standards, tools and ways of working across AI and traditional digital products.
Develop career pathways for Product Designers and UI/UX Designers, growing their capabilities across product design, user research, interaction design, and emerging AI experience design.

Who You Are

You are a product-minded design leader who combines strong design fundamentals with the ability to shape user experiences across a diverse portfolio of digital products. You bring clarity to complex problems and can translate user needs, product vision and emerging technologies into experiences that are intuitive, useful and engaging.

You are curious about how technology is changing the way people interact with digital products, including the rapidly evolving AI product landscape. You keep abreast of leading commercial products, their capabilities and how users interact with them, drawing relevant insights to inform and improve the design of our own products and services.

You are motivated by impact beyond individual products - developing designers, establishing strong design practices and building a Product Design capability that can evolve alongside changing technologies and user expectations.

Must Have

Bachelor's degree in Design, Computer Science, Information Systems, Psychology, Communications or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
8-12+ years of experience in product design, UX/UI design, interaction design or a related field.
Strong portfolio demonstrating end-to-end product design experience across complex digital products and services.
Strong experience in user research, usability testing, interaction design, prototyping and visual design.
Good understanding of the commercial AI product landscape, including the features, capabilities and user experience of leading AI products and platforms.
Experience designing AI-enabled products and familiarity with emerging AI interaction patterns.
Experience establishing or evolving design systems and reusable design patterns across multiple products.
Experience working closely with Product Managers and engineers in cross-functional product teams.
Experience leading and developing designers and establishing strong design practices and standards.

Nice to Have

Master's degree or equivalent experience in Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design, Design or a related discipline.
Relevant professional certifications or formal training in UX, product design, design leadership or related disciplines.
Experience building or maturing a Product Design practice, including capability development and career pathways.
Experience with content design, information architecture or digital content strategy.
Familiarity with responsible AI design principles, including transparency, user control, trust and human oversight.
Experience working in higher education, public sector or similarly complex stakeholder environments.
