As the Principal for Corporate Communications, based in Singapore, you will have the opportunity to contribute to EDC’s corporate objective of helping customers succeed abroad, more specifically in the Indo-Pacific region. You will work in close partnership with the Indo-Pacific teams to set our growing efforts in that region for success – internally and externally.

EDC’s External Communications Team sits within the Corporate Communications division and is comprised of trusted advisors who elevate and protect EDC’s brand and reputation. The Principal, Indo-Pacific Communications role reports to the Director, External Communications & Projects. Its overall mandate is to expand EDC’s exposure in the Indo-Pacific region, while upholding and protecting the organization’s reputation, notably by developing and executing strategic communications plans for both internal and external audiences, as well as social media, engaging in proactive and reactive media relations, advising the Indo-Pacific senior leadership, developing communications materials and key messaging. The Principal, Indo-Pacific Communications also works in symbiose with its sister teams within Corporate Communications, the Employee Communications and Social Media teams, as well as in partnership with other groups within EDC, such as Human Resources, Public Affairs and International Relations (PAIR), Business Development, and Marketing, to establish an integrated communications approach. To some capacity, the principal will support Marketing and PAIR when there is a gap in the market. This support could represent up to 30% of the portfolio.

Discipline Summary

  • Leads the internal and external components of communications for the Info-Pacific region.
  • Applies strong strategic-thinking and high-influencing skills to develop and implement integrated communications strategies to raise awareness and increase understanding of EDC’s products and services offering and their impact for Canadian companies.
  • Applies expert understanding of the media and social media environment of the Indo-Pacific region to assess risks and opportunities for EDC, more specifically in order to support more and more Canadian companies already in or have interest in the Indo-Pacific region.
  • Understands complex business information and develops effective communications materials for external, internal audiences, including social media.
  • Effectively works within an environment with a federal government shareholder, multiple stakeholders, including employees, customers, media, and other government stakeholders.
  • Builds and manages relationships with key reporters, media outlets, social media influencers.
  • Builds effective working relationships with internal clients and provides high-quality professional services to support organizational strategies and plans.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provides specialist advice to internal clients, senior leadership and the executive.
  • Conceptualizes, develops, and implements external and internal communications strategies for significant initiatives and announcements.
  • Coaches and trains senior leaders and experts for media opportunities, and on social media.
  • Works collaboratively with teams, including Human Resources, Business Development, Employee Communications, social media, Government Relations, Corporate Outreach, and Marketing to ensure an integrated approach.
  • Provides strategic support and deploys effective tactics to develop the EDC culture among our employees in this region.
  • Establishes and drives a multi-channel communications strategy.
  • Prepares and manages all communications material (to name a few: speeches, key messages, presentation, press/trade release, announcements, internal and media events, posts, etc.).
  • Develops relationships with media and social media influencers.
  • Acts as an informal leader and lead project members, coming from different teams, for the length of special and temporary assignments.
  • Collaborates with corporate and local teams to provide strategic support for local partnerships and events as needed.

Screening Criteria

  • Completed an Undergraduate Degree in communications, journalism or related field.
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant experience. Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of communications principles and practices, and experience in building and executing communications strategies and plans, as well as social media.
  • Understanding of the media and current affairs, with demonstrated proactive and reactive media relations and employee communication experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of the media landscape in the Indo-Pacific region.
  • Demonstrated project management abilities, with experience leading large-scale projects while reporting to senior leaders.
  • Demonstrate ability and capacity to strategize, develop plans and deploy them with very few support (hands-on skills)

Language Requirements

  • Fluent in English (mandatory)
  • Proficiency in at least one Asian language (Mandarin, Japanese, Bahasa Indonesian, Malay, Korean, Thai, Tagalog, or Vietnamese) (mandatory)
  • French language skills (preferred but not mandatory)

Assets

  • Knowledge of and experience in customer and business-focused communications
  • Knowledge of global trade landscape
  • Experience in working within a multi-stakeholder environment that includes customers, media, civil society and government.
  • Event management experience
  • Exposure to the fields of banking/finance, commercial trade, and economics
