Job description

About the role

To plan, source, verify, write and edit the daily news output covering Jamiyah's own activities and the affairs of the Muslim community in Singapore, the region and around the world, for broadcast on JamiyahTV and for distribution through the Jamiyah SuperApp. The News Producer is the officer accountable for the accuracy, fairness and regulatory compliance of everything the News Desk publishes or puts to air.

Key responsibilities
  • Own the daily and weekly news diary; attend editorial meetings; set the running order and assign coverage.
  • Commission, write and edit scripts for the daily signature news segments defined in the JamiyahTV master plan, for e.g., Muslim World and Community Bulletin, together with related promotional and continuity items.
  • Deliver against the Year 1 content library targets in the master plan, including the Muslim World library and the ongoing Community Bulletin strand.
  • Direct voice-over recording and work with the Studio and Post-Production units on packaging, lower-thirds, station idents and delivery to the broadcast server.
  • Supply news content and updates to the SuperApp in a format suited to mobile reading, coordinating with the Operations Executive.
  • Build and coordinate the network of freelance and volunteer international correspondents across markets including Malaysia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, Australia, Canada and the United States.
  • Cultivate relationships with news agencies, Islamic broadcasters and media partners, mosques, embassies, community organisations and humanitarian NGOs as sources of stories and footage.
  • Apply and document a verification standard for all incoming material, including corroboration requirements, provenance checks on user-generated and AI-generated media, and reverse checks on images and video.
  • Ensure output complies with IMDA content codes, classification and accessibility requirements, and with Jamiyah's obligations on copyright and licensing of third-party footage, defamation risk and the Personal Data Protection Act.
  • Brief and supervise freelancers, stringers, interns and graphics support; review their work and develop their skills.
About you
  • Degree in Journalism, Communications, Media Studies or a related discipline, or equivalent professional newsroom experience.
  • At least five to eight years in news, of which a minimum of two years in an editing, chief sub or supervisory capacity; broadcast or video news experience strongly preferred.
  • Proven ability to write and edit to broadcast standard: scripting for pictures, voice-over direction, and an understanding of delivery and compliance workflows.
  • Rigorous verification and fact-checking practice, and a working knowledge of media law as it applies in Singapore – defamation, copyright, contempt and privacy.
  • Excellent command of English. Working proficiency in Malay is strongly preferred for community coverage; Arabic is an advantage.
  • Sound understanding of Islamic affairs, of Muslim community issues in Singapore and internationally, and of the particular care required when reporting religion in a multi-religious society.
  • Sound editorial judgement under deadline pressure, and the confidence to say no to material that does not meet the standard.
  • Maintain high standards of professional and ethical conduct.
  • Support and promote diversity and inclusion within the workplace.
  • Engage in continuous learning and development.
About us
