The Singapore Teaching and Academic Research Talent (START) Scheme, co-funded by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and SIT, encourages and supports exceptional Singaporeans interested in pursuing an academic career at SIT.

The Applied Research Fellowship offers doctoral candidates nearing or recently completing their studies an opportunity to engage in advanced training and/or research at an overseas university for one year. Besides financial support, awardees receive academic mentorship and are considered for an Assistant Professorship upon completion.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

  • Singapore citizen
  • Doctoral candidates who have recently completed or are about to complete their studies in supported areas for START
  • Excellent academic record with high proficiency and motivation in the research area
  • Accepted or applied for postdoctoral training at a leading overseas university in aligned research areas
  • Keen interest in an academic career

Fellows will be assigned a SIT faculty mentor and have opportunities for faculty development programs. The fellowship duration is typically one year, with possible extension to two years under exceptional circumstances.

Service Commitment

One year of service for each year of sponsorship.

Application Process

  • Applications are open year-round; those received before 15 January 2026 will be considered for 2026 intake.
  • Shortlisted applicants will undergo interviews throughout the year.
  • The final panel interview for the 2026 intake will occur from mid-March to end-April 2026.
  • Final award decisions will be made by July 2026.
