Job description

We are seeking a Mid-level to Senior Associate to join Corporate practice, working in the Private Capital team in our Singapore office. In this role, you will be working primarily with our Head of Infrastructure, Asia, Glynn Cooper, as other corporate private capital and energy & infrastructure specialists across the Asia Pacific region and the wider Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer network. This is a dynamic, energetic and fun team environment with a first class multinational and regional client portfolio, including major energy companies such as BP, Chevron, Petronas, Pertamina, PTT Group and Tenaga Nasional, international renewables developers/investors such as Iberdrola, Corio Generation, Blueleaf Energy and Engie, financial investors into energy and infrastructure such as BlackRock, GIC, Macquarie, Goldman Sachs, CDPQ and INA, as well as other key Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer network clients such as DP World, BHP, Keppel, International Finance Corporation, Mitsubishi, Marubeni, Sumitomo and China Power.

Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer has been working on leading private capital matters for decades – and we have numerous strengths that position us well to continue seizing opportunities as private capital develops further. These include:

  • our market-leading real-assets expertise – across real estate, energy and infrastructure
  • the strength of our global footprint
  • our leadership in areas driving investment trends, including energy transition and ESG.

We work for many large private capital clients globally – in fact, private capital intersects with most of our practices and sectors. Our work in recent years has ranged from advising on numerous multibillion-dollar acquisitions, to helping one of the world's largest investment-management companies expand into new assets in new geographies.

What you'll do

  • Work across a range of corporate transactions including private M&A, joint ventures, project developments, commercial contracts and restructuring for both Asia and cross border transactions.
  • Play a key role in transactions, including drafting and negotiating documents and supervising associate responsible for due diligence workstreams.
  • Project manage transactions to ensure that key deadlines are met, and deliverables are anticipated, including working closely with other legal teams across the firm to deliver an integrated service to our clients.
  • Manage and build client relationships, including assisting with business development activities, events, pitching, marketing and thought leadership.
  • Work with our knowledge and Digital Legal Delivery teams to leverage AI and other technology to improve legal delivery tools and enhance efficiency.

To be successful in this role you will:

  • Have at least 6 years post qualification experience in the energy, resources or infrastructure sectors, preferably with solid corporate and commercial contracts transactional experience as outlined above;
  • Be able to demonstrate excellent drafting, analytical and deal project management skills;
  • Be a confident, driven and collaborative individual;
  • Have experience of working as the lead associate on M&A, joint ventures, commercial contracts and regulation in energy and infrastructure;
  • Have relevant professional qualifications (Singapore qualification would be desirable but not a must);
  • Have a strong academic record;
  • Be enthusiastic, adaptable and industrious, with excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural skills;
  • Work well with people, including more junior team members who will depend on you for guidance;
  • Have excellent English language skills (fluent written and spoken English is required).
