Job summary

Singapore Polytechnic invites applications for an academic role focused on Software and Applications, including Algorithm & Architecture Analysis, Database Systems, and Distributed Systems. The appointee will guide students, develop curricula, and participate in consultancy and applied research projects.

The lecturer will foster youth and adult learners, deliver lessons, assess learning, and contribute to school initiatives, with emphasis on clear communication and innovative teaching methods.

Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years of relevant work experience in Software/DevOps/Platform/Database engineering.
• Passionate about tinkering and hacking to gain understanding of underlying mechanisms.
• Passionate about education and possess strong interest in guiding youths and adult learners in deconstructing and reconstructing knowledge.
• Self-driven, independent and ready to work as a team.

Responsibilities

• Conduct lessons, create teaching and assessment materials, and facilitate learning of students (youths and adult learners).
• Develop and maintain new/existing teaching curriculum, including regular review and improvements to enhance student learning and employability.
• Keep current with trends and developments in Software and Application Development.
• Support the School’s strategic initiatives through involvement in committee work and projects such as process improvement and new courses management.

The job of an academic is challenging and meaningful. Not only will they have both the knowledge and working experience, but they must also possess the ability to deconstruct the knowledge and experience, guiding students to reconstruct them as their own knowledge. He/she must also possess a passion for working with youths, nurturing them, and moulding their characters. There will be opportunities to develop the curriculum, introduce new courses as well as be involved in consultancy and other applied research projects. Administrative work related to teaching and School/Institutional strategic initiatives will be an important part of the job too. Successful candidates will be expected to be resourceful and innovative with initiative and good communication skills.

What you will be working on

Software and Applications

The appointee must be competent to teach in at least one of the following subjects:

• Algorithm & Architecture Analysis – A good understanding of tools, frameworks, and language paradigms to make informed decisions about chosen implementations and their trade-offs on performance, such as time/space complexity, resource utilization, and system scalability.
• Database Systems – A good understanding of database performance optimization through techniques such as sharding, indexing, query tuning, concurrency, and the handling of distributed transactions.
• Distributed Systems – A good understanding of modern architectural patterns and system components—such as microservices, containerization, load balancing, and message queues—and how to integrate them to build reliable, scalable, and fault-tolerant infrastructure.

Apart from the know-hows of the tools and processes, the lecturer should possess clear understanding of the end-to-end process of software development, facilitating students in the deconstruction and reconstruction of concepts, analysing the trade-offs, and explaining how different companies may adopt a slightly different configuration from another.

What we are looking for

Successful candidate will be offered a 2-year contract in the first instance.
