What the role is:
The primary purpose of the job is to perform the duties of an academic lecturer. He or she will be involved in clinical supervision of students and provide eye examination/consultation services for patients in Singapore Polytechnic Optometry Centre (SPOC). The job of a lecturer is a challenging yet meaningful one. Not only will he or she need to have both technical knowledge and working experience in the relevant discipline, he or she must also possess a passion for Pre-Employment Training (PET), Continuing Education and Training (CET) and Industry Engagement (IE), which involve working with young and adult learners, nurturing them to be work ready, life ready and world ready, as well as supporting companies in their growth and transformation. There will be developmental opportunities to develop syllabus, introduce new programmes as well as be involved in overseas student learning trips. Additionally, administrative work related to teaching and school/ institutional strategic initiatives will also be an important part of the job. The successful candidate is expected to be a good team player who is resilient, resourceful and innovative, and possesses good communication skills.
The successful candidate must be competent to develop content and teach in at least two of the following subject areas:
- Geometrical and Physical Optics, Physiological and Visual Optics
- Contact Lens and Contact Lens Complications
- Ophthalmic Optics and Dispensing
- Clinical Optometry
- Ocular Diseases
- Binocular Vision
- Paediatric Optometry
Responsibilities:
- Teaching and Learning
- Conduct lessons and facilitate learning for both PET and CET students
- Deploy effective pedagogy to facilitate learning
- Supervise and assess student clinicians in SPOC
- Module Coordination
- Review modules by proposing and implementing action plans for areas of improvement that would enhance students’ learning experience and academic performance
- Carry out module-related administrative work such as providing teaching and assessment materials and conducting briefing/training for module teaching team members
- Module Development
- Develop teaching and learning materials that are current and relevant by keeping abreast of developments and trends in the industry
- Develop assessments and assessment rubrics
- Develop asynchronous learning materials using EduTech tools and platforms
- Pastoral Care
- Provide basic duty of care and effective guidance to students
- Industry Engagement
- Supervise students’ internship placements
- Participate and/or supervise industry-linked projects, which may include, but are not limited to, students’ module-based projects and company and workforce transformation-related projects
- Support institutional and school strategic initiatives through involvement in committee work and projects
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Optometry or a related field
- Possess at least three years of relevant industry experience in optometry or eye care
- Fully registered optometrist with Optometrists and Opticians Board
- In-depth understanding of optometry principles, eye health, and vision correction
- Ability to multi-task, guide students during clinical supervision and provide consultation for patients
- Up-to-date with current trends, advancements and technologies in optometry
- Patience, empathy and enthusiasm for supporting students
- Resourceful, self-driven, adaptable and have a growth mindset to tackle new challenges and explore ways to optimize existing workflows and processes
- Possess a strong interest in exploring new technologies and pedagogical approaches
- Enthusiastic and positive-thinking individual who enjoys working in a dynamic environment and thrives under pressure
- People-oriented individual with strong interpersonal, written and communication skills
- Possess good teamwork attributes
Successful candidate will be offered a 2-year contract in the first instance.
