Job description

Role Summary

As Lead Electronics Engineer – Sensors, you will provide technical leadership in the development of advanced sensing technologies, sensing platforms and associated algorithms for Dyson products. The role focuses on Air Quality sensing, LiDAR, Vision Systems, position and displacement sensor and other sensing technologies that enable intelligent product features across multiple categories.

About the Role

The Lead Electronics Engineer – Sensors will be part of the SEA Hardware Electronics team and will work across R&D programmes to develop, integrate and mature sensing systems for Dyson products. This is a hands‑on technical leadership role requiring strong engineering judgement, system‑level thinking and the ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams and external technology partners. You will help define sensing solutions from early concept through to validation, product integration and production readiness. Lead the development and delivery of sensing technology platforms for Air Quality sensing, LiDAR, Vision Systems, position and displacement sensor and other sensing technologies across Dyson product categories. Translate product and system requirements into clear sensing architectures, technical requirements, data collection plans and validation approaches. Define, develop and validate sensing algorithms, including data collection, data analysis, signal conditioning, signal processing, algorithm tuning and performance assessment using Matlab or Python where appropriate. Collaborate with Hardware, Software, Mechanical, Test, Manufacturing, Product and Quality teams to integrate sensing systems into Dyson products and ensure product requirements are met. Provide technical leadership from proof of concept through development, verification, validation and production readiness. Engage key suppliers and technology partners to evaluate sensing technologies, influence supplier roadmaps and identify scalable hardware platforms suitable for Dyson products. Prepare clear technical documentation, design review materials, analysis reports and recommendations to support decision making across projects.

What You’ll Achieve in Your First Year

Establish a clear understanding of the current Air Quality sensing, LiDAR and Vision System technology landscape, supplier ecosystem and Dyson product needs. Work with cross‑functional teams to develop and integrate robust sensing solutions into Dyson products, balancing performance, cost, manufacturability and product requirements. Work with product owners and engineering stakeholders to capture sensing requirements, define data collection needs, and select appropriate sensing technologies and algorithms. Develop, tune and validate sensing algorithms using simulation and measured data, Matlab or Python analysis, and appropriate signal processing methods. Provide technical coaching and mentoring to engineers, helping to build capability in sensing hardware, data analysis, signal processing and algorithm development.

About You

You are an experienced sensing or electronics engineer with strong technical depth, practical product development experience and the confidence to lead complex technical work. You are comfortable working across disciplines, using data to make decisions, and influencing suppliers and stakeholders to deliver robust engineering outcomes.

Essential Skills and Experience

Degree qualified in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Robotics, Computer Engineering or a related technical discipline. Typically, 5+ years of experience in sensing system design, implementation, testing, analysis and characterisation, preferably with exposure to Air Quality sensing, LiDAR, Vision Systems, optical sensing, environmental sensing or related technologies. Additional knowledge on optics and optical simulation is advantageous. Solid understanding of how key sensing technologies work, including sensor physics, sensing architecture, interface requirements, calibration needs, limitations and practical product integration considerations. Strong experience with quantitative and statistical data analysis for sensing algorithm development; Matlab coding is expected and Python experience is advantageous. Good knowledge of analogue signal conditioning, digital signal processing, filtering, noise analysis and sensor data interpretation. Experience defining test methods, collecting representative data, analysing performance and translating findings into algorithm or hardware improvements. Experience working with suppliers or technology partners to evaluate sensing modules, define technical requirements, review performance data and influence future technology roadmaps. Strong analytical, troubleshooting and system‑level problem‑solving skills, with the ability to make evidence‑based technical recommendations. Experience with hardware lab equipment, prototype bring‑up, system validation, calibration approach and end‑of‑line test considerations. Good understanding of product development, quality engineering processes, design reviews, validation planning and documentation discipline.

Desirable Skills and Behaviours

Confident communicator with the ability to explain complex technical topics clearly to engineering teams, suppliers and senior stakeholders. Demonstrates technical leadership, curiosity, collaboration and a pragmatic approach to solving complex engineering problems. Able to work independently, prioritise effectively and deliver high‑quality outcomes within challenging project timelines.
