Job description

We are seeking a dedicated, detail-oriented Laboratory Technologist to join our team at the National Centre for Engineering Biology. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the day-to-day operations of the research centre, ensuring equipment, instruments, and inventories are maintained to the highest standards. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with hands‑on laboratory experience who seeks to further develop their management skills.

Job Responsibilities:

• Keep lab equipment running smoothly through routine checks and basic upkeep.
• Support analytical instruments (including mass spectrometry) operations: monitor performance, handle basic troubleshooting, and upscale complex issues when needed.
• Manage chemicals, samples, and lab supplies: track inventory, replenish stocks and ensure items are labelled and stored properly.
• Manage lab procurement: get quotes, prepare orders, and track deliveries.
• Provide research administrative and lab safety support to keep daily operations organised.
• Perform other operational duties as required.

Essential

• Diploma in Biotechnology, Biomedical Science, or a related discipline.
• Familiarity with analytical instruments and basic upkeep/maintenance (training will be provided for role‑specific systems).
• Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage lab inventory and support procurement tasks.
• Good attention to detail, with the ability to prioritise and handle multiple tasks.
• Self‑motivated, responsible, and open to learning new techniques and systems.
• Proficient in Microsoft 365 (e.g., Outlook, Excel, Word).
• Team‑oriented, with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary environment.

Desirable

• Prior experience in a laboratory or core facility environment, or in procurement or lab support within a research setting.
• Familiarity with mass spectrometry and its maintenance.
• Knowledge of workplace safety and chemical regulations.
