Job summary

Tan Tock Seng Hospital is seeking a Laboratory Technical Assistant/Associate to support the Microbiology Section in preparation, autoclaving, and material handling. You will assist with specimen handling, stock management, and instrument maintenance, functioning within a fast-paced lab team.

The role requires a relevant diploma or equivalent and provides on-the-job training with PPE. You will contribute to quality control and adherence to regulatory requirements in a hospital setting.

Qualifications

• Higher NITEC / Diploma / A-Level or equivalent.
• Experience in a clinical laboratory setting preferred.
• On-the-job training and PPE provided.
• Able to work in a fast-paced environment and in a team.

Responsibilities

• Prepare materials for testing (saline, culture media, reagents, disinfectants) and autoclave lab items per protocols.
• Move supplies to storage/cold room and return as required.
• Assist retrieving specimens or culture plates from the chiller for work-up or verification.
• Receive and check stock items; assist in stock management.
• Assist in cleaning spills (biological/chemical).
• Maintain instruments to ensure proper function; assist in troubleshooting.
• Attend to telephone enquiries and direct as appropriate; comply with licensing/regulatory requirements.
• Perform other ad-hoc duties and support quality programmes in the section.

Laboratory Technical Assistant / Associate

Job Scope

You will perform preparation of materials required for testing, e.g. saline, homemade culture media, reagents and disinfectants, and washing of glassware or reusable materials either manually or using the washer, and autoclaving of lab materials and biohazardous wastes according to established protocols in the Microbiology Section of the Department of Laboratory Medicine (DLM) in Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) and in the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID).

You will also be required to:

• Move supplies / materials to storage areas / cold room, and packs and removes them from the storage areas / cold room, as required;
• Assists with retrieving specimens or culture plates from the chiller for further work up or verification, as requested by the Medical Laboratory Technologists/Scientists or Microbiologist;
• Assist to receive and check stock items;
• Assist in cleaning up biological or chemical spills;
• Assist to maintain instruments to ensure proper functioning of the instruments;
• Attend to telephone enquiries and redirect as appropriate;
• Comply with requirements set by various licensing, regulatory and accrediting agencies;
• Perform any other ad-hoc duties as assigned.

You will participate in quality assurance and quality control programmes in the Section, assists in initiatives to review and improve processes within the Section to achieve organisational goals, and support the Section Leader in operational and administrative matters.

Job Requirements

• Preferably Higher NITEC / Diploma / ‘A’ Level and above
• Relevant experience in a clinical laboratory setting is preferred.
• On-the-job training and necessary personal protective equipment will be provided.
• Good laboratory technical skills and knowledge of laboratory operations with the right aptitude to perform the duties and responsibilities in this job grade.
• Expect moderate lifting, bending, walking, repetitive motion, and standing to complete the assigned tasks.
• Able to work effectively, meticulously and responsibly in a fast-paced environment independently, as well as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Able to prioritise tasks and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
• Possess good interpersonal, organisational, coordination and communication skills
• Basic computer literacy and proficiency in laboratory information systems and Microsoft Office applications.
• Work schedule for this position is 5.25 days, and you will be rostered to work on Saturdays, and certain Sundays and Public Holidays to meet the needs of the department and hospital.Working hours will be staggered office hours, which can range from 7.30am-4.30pm till 9am to 6pm.
