Responsibilities

  • Receive and process laboratory specimens via Pneumatic Tube System (PTS) and over-the-counter submissions.
  • Operate the LIS to manage specimen receipt, result enquiry, result entry and orders.
  • Sort and distribute specimens to appropriate sections; perform basic specimen processing.
  • Manage specimen movement for in-house and referral testing per test catalogue requirements.
  • Perform basic rapid testing procedures per approved protocols.
  • Alert appropriate staff on critical results; perform preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Monitor inventory and notify for replenishment of reagents and consumables.
  • Respond to customer enquiries at the laboratory reception and escalate when needed.
  • Ensure GLP, CAP accreditation compliance and safety standards are followed.
  • Assist in orientation and training of new staff; participate in routine administrative tasks.

Job description

Position Overview

The incumbent is responsible for performing laboratory diagnostic support activities and related operational functions to ensure the provision of accurate, timely, and quality laboratory services to both internal and external customers. The role supports the efficient workflow of the laboratory through specimen management, basic testing, customer service, and compliance with laboratory quality and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities (80%)
Specimen Reception and Processing
  • Receive laboratory specimens via the Pneumatic Tube System (PTS) and over-the-counter submissions, and identify or reject specimens that do not meet acceptance criteria.
  • Operate the Laboratory Information System (LIS) to perform functions such as specimen receipt, result enquiry, result entry, and order entry when required.
  • Sort, organise, and distribute specimens to the appropriate laboratory sections and work benches. Perform basic specimen processing and preparation as required.
  • Manage specimen movement for both in-house and referral (send-out) testing, ensuring all specimens are handled, packaged, and transported according to established test catalogue requirements.
Laboratory Operations
  • Perform basic rapid testing procedures in accordance with approved laboratory protocols and work instructions.
  • Alert the appropriate laboratory personnel promptly when critical test results are identified.
  • Carry out routine preventive maintenance of laboratory equipment and notify the relevant personnel of any equipment malfunction or operational issues.
  • Monitor inventory levels and inform the appropriate personnel when reagents, test kits, consumables, or other laboratory supplies require replenishment.
  • Report adverse incidents, non-conformances, or operational concerns to senior laboratory staff promptly.
  • Perform shift duties, including weekends, public holidays, and after-office hours, as required by operational needs.
Customer Service and Communication
  • Receive, respond to, and resolve customer enquiries at the laboratory reception counter or through other communication channels. Escalate complex or unresolved issues to the appropriate personnel.
  • Promptly carry out instructions and work assignments provided by senior staff in support of laboratory operations.
Quality, Safety and Compliance
  • Maintain current knowledge of laboratory instrumentation, methodologies, techniques, and procedures through participation in workshops, seminars, training programmes, and continuing education activities.
  • Comply with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), accreditation requirements, including those of the College of American Pathologists (CAP), and all applicable Singapore regulatory standards.
  • Adhere to all laboratory safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Laboratory Safety Manual.
  • Uphold the Department of Laboratory Medicine (DLM) Workplace Etiquette standards and demonstrate behaviours aligned with NUHS Core Values.
Secondary Responsibilities (20%)
  • Assist in the orientation, training, and demonstration of laboratory procedures to new staff and trainees.
  • Provide guidance and support to team members when required.
  • Participate in routine laboratory administrative activities, including filing, processing delivery orders, invoices, and other documentation.
  • Assist in the evaluation and validation of new laboratory test methodologies, when assigned.
  • Undertake any other duties and responsibilities assigned by the Reporting Officer (RO), Section Leader, or laboratory management.
Qualifications
Minimum Education Requirements
  • Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science or a related discipline.
Skills, Competencies and Experience
  • Relevant experience in a clinical laboratory setting is preferred.
Technical Competencies
  • Good laboratory technical skills and knowledge of laboratory operations.
  • Basic computer literacy and proficiency in laboratory information systems and Microsoft Office applications.
Personal Attributes

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Working Schedule

3 rotating shifts

  • Day shift 8am to 5pm
  • Afternoon shift 11am to 8pm
  • Night shift 730pm to 830am
