Laboratory Manager (Construction Materials Testing)

Primary Responsibilities

Oversee the daily laboratory operations and manage a team to ensure efficiency and safety, providing technical advice and training on test result interpretation, ensuring compliance with international testing standards, and promoting a safe working environment.

Specific Responsibilities

1. Manage and supervise a team of technical staff for both field and laboratory sampling and testing of construction materials, namely concrete, aggregates, soils, asphalt, steel, and other materials as required.
2. Manage the daily operations and efficiency of the laboratory in a safe, timely, and cost-effective manner.
3. Provide technical advice and training to coworkers and customers on the interpretation of test results.
4. Understand the requirements of international testing standards and verification of test results before issuance.
5. Ensure adherence to the company Quality System and laboratory management system requirements.
6. Promote a safe working environment.
7. Liaise with clients with regards to technical and logistical enquiries.
8. Integrate corporate functions such as administration, procurement, logistics, IT, and other company units into overall laboratory management.
9. Identify potential new areas of growth and opportunity for the laboratory.
10. Take the lead in laboratory business performance, financial review, and report to senior management.
11. Conduct regular formal and informal technical presentations to relevant stakeholders.

Requirements

1. Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering, Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or related field.
2. At least 8 years of relevant working experience, with a minimum of 5 years in a managerial role ideally with laboratory operations management and supervision of materials testing operations.
3. Good technical knowledge, well versed in ISO 17025 documentation and technical documents such as BS, EN, ASTM, etc.
4. A certified SAC-SINGLAS signatory will be advantageous.
5. Self-motivated, meticulous, and committed individual who can work well under pressure and within tight deadlines.
6. Able to work independently with a high level of initiative and resourcefulness.
7. Ability to build and maintain relationships, understand client needs, and deliver to meet their expectations.
8. Acts quickly and decisively with the ability to make tough calls.
9. Good communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
