The Role
The primary responsibility of the appointee is toprovide specialist technical and design support for the Junior Arts Centre teams’ curricular and co-curricular activities, assisting staff with an additional layer of knowledge, training, and resources, as and when required.
Main responsibilities include overseeing the operational requirements and facilities within the Junior Arts Centre, ensuring that health & safety, rigging, processes, and technologies are upheld and maintained at a consistently high standard.
The appointee provides an accessible service of design and technical knowledge (lighting, sound, set construction/design and audio visual) for Junior productions, and to liaise and plan directly with departmental staff, theatre & events, contractors, and external freelancers, managing and overseeing schedules and works, from concept to completion of project(s).
The appointee reports to Head of Drama (Junior School).
Key Responsibilities
1. Faculty Support Role
- To support teaching and learning, events, activities, and development of facilities/resources of the Junior Arts Centre, as a member of the Arts Faculty Technical Team under the leadership of the Head of Drama and other Arts Department Heads.
- To support other activities and events (e.g. Junior/whole school) as deemed necessary and reasonable by the Head of Faculty.
2. Production and Event Responsibilities
- To produce and share relevant design resources for staff and students.
- Provide training to members of staff on the use of equipment in the studio spaces and any other specialist programs or technology as required.
- To observe, contribute to and support lessons as and when required.
- To ensure that performance & teaching spaces are ready for first lessons/performances at the start of each day/performance and returned to normal at the end of each day/performance.
- To provide creative and practical solutions for set, costume, lighting, sound, projections, and props.
- To attend and facilitate production meetings.
- Keep a written record of tasks set and progress made.
- To actively engage with the creative process and propose solutions for any foreseeable problems.
- To outsource & liaise with external vendors for props, costumes, set and auxiliary technical equipment where necessary.
- Facilitate works from external vendors.
3. Assistant Production Management & Stage Management Responsibilities
- Where appropriate assist the Drama Assistant in Stage Management & Production Management responsibilities. Assist in ensuring production schedules are created, implemented, and adapted where appropriate, and that rehearsal spaces are booked.
- To oversee and ensure that the spending of each production is within the budget.
- To do up the budgeting comparison for each musical production.
- To ensure that the license for each musical production is adhered to.
- To be present at rehearsals to record and act upon needs and requests, particularly in terms of props, scenery, lighting, sound, and other technical departments, with a view to distributing information to other staff where appropriate. This is likely to be after school hours in the lead up to a production.
- To ensure that rehearsals are furnished with floor markings, furniture, props, and/or substitute props as required, and that such items are tidied away at the end of rehearsal.
- To act as stage manager, assistant stage manager, or deputy stage manager where necessary, for rehearsals, technical rehearsals, and/or performances.
- To supervise and work with student Stage Managers for each production.
- To supervise and work with student crew for each production.
- To ensure Risk Assessment is done for each production.
4. Costumes
- To assist in sourcing for and purchasing of costumes for the different examinations and productions.
- To maintain and upkeep the hygiene and cleanliness of the costumes and costume store.
5. Props
- To assist in sourcing for and purchasing props for different examinations and productions.
- To assist in mending broken props and ensure props are safe to use by students.
- To liaise with the Art Department on making of props when necessary.
6. Lighting
- Operate and programme digital lighting boards for all productions and events in the Junior Arts Centre performance spaces.
- To lead in designing lighting states alongside directors/facilitators for all performances in the Junior Arts Centre.
- To be able to draft a lighting plan, focus sheet, and cue list.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of the technical provision in all arts spaces.
- Oversee, identify, and plan relevant equipment upgrades or disposal.
- Train students and staff when appropriate.
- Able to rig and focus in a timely fashion.
- Maintain and resource lanterns, dimmer packs, and lighting boards (e.g. ordering lamps, connectors, cabling, gels, accessories etc), manage technical areas and maintain safe environments within the studios (dressing cables, gel inventory, accessories, maintaining technical equipment audit etc).
- To ensure safety is adhered to at all times when working at height. Ensuring the correct equipment is used, maintained and checked on a regular basis.
7. Sound
- Maintain and operate the studio sound systems for curricular and co-curricular work.
- Manage storage and teaching resources for studios.
- Collaborate with staff and students to produce an appropriate sound design for any lesson or performance event, as necessary.
- Able to lead the acquisition, retrieval, and production of soundtracks for performances, including editing and processing where necessary.
- To set up and use microphones, recording voice overs, and effects into Logic Pro.
- To program and use sound cueing software (e.g. QLab).
- To produce the necessary paperwork for the smooth implementation and running of sound in a performance (e.g. cue sheet).
- To identify, source, and integrate any necessary upgrades and installation works to replace old/broken sound systems/equipment.
8. Set
- To ensure priority and strict implementation of correct health and safety practices when working on any set-related project.
- To produce the necessary costing, planning, research, technical drawings, and artistic vision to make the set design a sensible and achievable reality.
- Work with an allocated (variable) budget on a range of contrasting productions.
- To facilitate in conceptualizing the director’s vision via meetings, research, and design proposals.
- To build and construct sets, strictly when necessary.
- To liaise with the Art Department on production timelines, additional queries, assistance, or manpower.
- To project manage the timeline for sourcing, construction, venue usage with all necessary, involved parties.
- To ensure tools are safe to use with no defects and if so, to source and replace them as soon as possible.
- Engage external contractors/suppliers when necessary and oversee all works or setups in the Junior Arts Centre.
9. Administrative Support
- To maintain and/or coordinate the administrative responsibilities within the department, pertaining to both curricular and co-curricular activities.
- To liaise with various departments in the school on behalf of the department.
- To manage, in liaison with other members of the department, the room and resource booking systems.
- To work with the Head of Department, supporting them in maintaining the Health and Safety requirements within the new drama spaces.
- To provide health and safety, and safeguarding support with rehearsals outside of curriculum time, as agreed with Head of Department.
- To compile receipts for purchases, complete an administrative form and seek approval from the Deputy Head of Junior School.
- To plan and propose a budget for technical upgrades and replacements.
10. Video & Camera
- To film, organise, edit, and reformat all the productions performed in the Junior Arts Centre where necessary.
- To do proper archival of performances.
- Film department productions, process videos, archive rehearsals & performances with camera shots.
- To provide video recording and editing services for varying projects and productions.
- To provide, source and/or operate specialized projection mapping equipment, video content and A/V equipment e.g. LED wall, Arkaos Media Master.
- Film and edit promotional materials.
- Upkeep the TV-Screen displays around the Junior Arts Centre and upload any show posters where necessary.
11. Technology Skills
- Video archiving, digitising video and editing skills.
- MS Office, Google Docs, QLab (or similar), and personal professional development.
- Manage a video archive including photographs, videos, and programs.
- Work with multi-media performance styles (e.g. projections).
- Support the development of digital resources e.g. use of Interactive Whiteboard.
12. Teaching & Learning
- To support a technical CCA, ‘Drama Tech Club.’
13. Communication
- Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills with students, teachers, and parents.
- Liaise with other members of the Drama Department, the AV Department, and the Arts Faculty to ensure smooth coordination of tasks – by initiating discussions to promote progress.
14. General
- Have a commitment to punctual timekeeping and good attendance.
- Demonstrate a positive attitude to colleagues, parents, and children.
- Maintain a standard of personal image in keeping with the role.
- Work in areas of the school in other job-related tasks as circumstances require.
- Operate within the policies of the school.
- On an annual basis complete the Review and Development exercise and undertake identified development opportunities. Maintain an accurate and up to date record of all professional development opportunities.
- Be responsible for reporting any concerns about a child to the Designated Safeguarding Lead.

Skills and Qualifications
- Minimum Diploma holder in technical theatre or a relevant field
- Extensive knowledge of theatre lighting, sound and staging
- Relevant certifications relating to theatre safe working practices is advantageous (Eg. Working at height certification)
- Industry experience in technical theatre
- Proficient in a range of Microsoft Office Applications including Excel
- Experience of working within a school context is preferred but not essential
- Ability to work on several projects and tasks at once
- Willing to learn new skills and technology
