Job description

About Us

SPH Media’s mission is to be the trusted source of news and lifestyle content in Singapore and Asia. One of our core purposes is to produce credible, balanced, and objective news and analysis, always with a view to uphold the public good and fostering an informed, engaged citizenry.

We welcome talented individuals to join us and grow a career in a vibrant and collaborative environment built around a culture of respect and inclusivity.

As an employer, we are committed to rewarding our people fairly and developing them in their careers.

About the Role

We’re looking for an experienced and resourceful journalist who knows how to spot a compelling story and chase it down. This role requires strong initiative and news instincts, and the ability to think beyond the obvious. An ideal candidate will be someone who is proactive, passionately digging, investigating, pitching, and pursuing stories that matter.

Whether it’s a quirky human-interest story, an offbeat deep dive, or a behind-the-scenes profile, your work should spark conversation, offer insight, and reflect life in Singapore the way it’s actually lived.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Pitch and produce original features that are hyperlocal, human-driven, timely and relevant
  • Cultivate and maintain contacts who can help surface underreported stories
  • Conduct interviews, both on the ground and remotely, with a range of newsmakers and everyday Singaporeans
  • Report, write and package stories with colour, context and a clear editorial angle
  • Work with the assistant editor to shape story direction and ensure quality and accuracy
  • Occasionally support special projects or the daily news cycle
  • Coordinate with the social media team to enhance storytelling through other formats
  • Stay up to date with current affairs, cultural shifts and under-the-radar developments in the community

Who we’re looking for:

You should be someone who:

  • Has at least 3-4 years of experience in journalism, news, or longform content
  • Understands what makes a story original, relevant and worth telling — and takes the initiative to pursue it
  • Writes with clarity, style and precision — and knows how to engage readers from the first line
  • Is organised, dependable and can juggle multiple stories and timelines
  • Has a creative eye and isn’t afraid to pitch bold, offbeat or unconventional ideas
  • Has strong interviewing skills and knows how to put sources at ease
  • Can work independently and as part of a collaborative editorial team
  • Is comfortable with shift work and irregular hours, including evenings and weekends as needed

Bonus points if you:

  • Have existing contacts in the community, creative, or social sector
  • Know how to shape social-friendly headlines and package features for online
  • Are comfortable doing street interviews or field work
  • Have experience writing for target audience, lifestyle or general interest publications
  • Have dabbled in multimedia or social storytelling (video, IG posts, TikToks, etc.)
  • Have a sense of humour and positive attitude
