Job summary

SG Courts - Supreme Court, State Courts and Family Justice Courts is seeking interpreters for a 1-year fixed term contract. The role involves accurate interpretation between English and Chinese in courts, chambers, and at Judiciary events, with potential night and Saturday duties.

Candidates should be proficient in English and Chinese and may have dialect proficiency. The Judiciary values calm, independent and team collaboration.

Qualifications

• Excellent command of English and Chinese.
• Willingness to learn dialects (Hokkien, Cantonese, Teochew).
• Qualifications in Interpretation/Translation or Chinese/English studies would be an advantage.

• Candidates with substantial relevant experience may apply.

Responsibilities

• Render accurate interpretation in courts, chambers, and tribunals from the English Language to the Chinese Language/dialect(s) and vice versa.
• Render accurate and professional interpretation in the English-Chinese pair at Judiciary events and/or conferences.
• Perform rotational Night Court duties and Saturday duties outside regular office hours as required by court operations.
• Provide accurate translation of court/court-related documents from English to Chinese and vice versa.
• Review and refine current work processes and procedures.
• Multi-task and perform other duties to support the administration of justice.

What you will be working on:

• Render accurate and professional interpretation in courts, chambers, and tribunals from the English Language to the Chinese Language/dialect(s) and vice versa
• Render accurate and professional interpretation in the English-Chinese pair, where required, at Judiciary events and/or conferences
• Perform rotational Night Court duties and Saturday duties outside regular office hours as required by court operations, with advance notice provided where applicable
• Provide accurate and professional translation of court/court-related documents from the English Language to the Chinese Language and vice versa
• Review and refine current work processes and procedures
• Multi-task and perform any other duties as assigned to facilitate or support the administration of justice

What we are looking for:

• Excellent command of both the English language and the Chinese language
• Proficiency in the Hokkien, Cantonese and/or Teochew dialect(s) and willingness to learn the dialect(s) in the course of their work would be an advantage
• Academic qualifications in Interpretation/Translation, Chinese Language/Studies or English Language/Studies would be an advantage
• Ability to remain calm under pressure and react quickly to unexpected situations
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
• Candidates with substantial relevant working experience and proficiencies may also apply
