Job description

What the role is:

Great ideas do not discriminate — anyone can have them. With the right protection and support, a great idea can become a trusted brand, a transformative technology, an innovative process or design, or even a song or story that inspires one’s soul.Housing Singapore’s largest community of intellectual property (IP) experts, IPOS understands better than anyone how important it is to protect ideas and creations for now and the future. We leverage on our deep technical, legal and business expertise to help innovative enterprises grow, through their intangible assets, including IP, from Singapore, through Singapore. We catalyse the ideas today, into assets tomorrow.

What you will be working on:

The interns will support research and policy work related to intellectual property (IP) and intangible assets (IA). The internship offers opportunities to apply data analytics and research skills to real-world policy questions using administrative and survey datasets. Depending on their interests and the team’s priorities, they may contribute to one or more projects, including the Singapore IP Survey, research on Singapore’s fashion-brand ecosystem using trademark data, and analysis of the IP filing behaviour of Singapore enterprises. They may also support event organisation, and gain exposure to other aspects of the department’s work.

Data Management and Analysis
  • Extract, clean, validate, and analyse administrative, survey, and other relevant datasets
  • Integrate and manage data from multiple sources
  • Analyse trends and patterns in the data to surface relevant insights
Research and Policy Analysis
  • Conduct research on IP, IA, innovation, and enterprise-related issues, such as trends and patterns in enterprise use of IP and IA
  • Support the interpretation of research findings and identification of policy implications
  • Contribute to reports, presentations, and other research outputs for internal and external stakeholders
Data Visualisation and Communication
  • Develop charts, dashboards, infographics, and other visualisations to communicate findings
  • Present research findings and contribute to discussions with relevant stakeholders
Survey and Stakeholder Engagement
  • Support the design, implementation, and administration of the Singapore IP Survey
  • Assist with stakeholder engagement and other activities associated with the team’s research projects
Events and Broader Exposure
  • Support the planning and organisation of events, including an associated event held during Singapore IP Week
  • Gain opportunities to engage with academics, policymakers, practitioners, and industry leaders through relevant events and platforms
Illustrative Projects
  • Singapore IP Survey: Support the design and implementation of the Singapore IP Survey, to better understand enterprises’ use of IA/IP, as well as track Singapore’s development as a hub for IA/IP activities
  • Understanding Singapore Fashion Brands through Trademark Data: Use trademark and related data to analyse Singapore's fashion-brand ecosystem and identify emerging trends and growth patterns
  • Singapore IP Enterprise Landscape: Extend existing research on IP filing behaviour among Singapore enterprises, including domestic versus international filing activities, and industry-level filing trends to understand innovation and commercialisation rates
What we are looking for:
  • Students from Economics, Data Science, Business Analytics, Statistics, Public Policy, or other related disciplines
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills
  • Comfortable working with large datasets and conducting quantitative analysis
  • Proficiency in data analysis or statistical software/tools such as Excel, Stata, Python, R, Power BI, or AWS QuickSight
  • Good written and verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Interest in research, public policy, intellectual property, innovation, or related areas would be an advantage
