A leading Japanese multinational seeks a Head of Legal to manage legal functions across Asia and Oceania. The role involves providing strategic legal counsel, managing compliance, and mitigating legal risks, with a focus on corporate governance and regulatory issues. About the Role
Our client, a leading Japanese multinational in the electronics and technology sector, is seeking a Head of Legal to lead and manage legal functions across its Asia and Oceania regional operations, as well as within its Singapore entity. This is a senior-level position that requires a seasoned legal professional with the ability to provide strategic legal counsel, ensure regulatory compliance, and mitigate legal risks across diverse jurisdictions.
You will report directly to the Managing Director of the Singapore entity and maintain a dotted-line reporting to the Legal and Compliance Departments at the global headquarters in Japan.
Key Responsibilities
1. Legal Strategy & Advisory
Develop legal strategies in alignment with global legal policy covering compliance, intellectual property, risk management, and corporate governance.
Provide legal advice on commercial, labor, data protection (PDPA/GDPR), anti-corruption, competition, and other relevant laws.
Act as a key legal advisor to management and regional stakeholders.
2. Regional Legal Oversight
Oversee legal and compliance activities for the regional group companies across Asia and Oceania (excluding China).
Ensure all business operations comply with internal policies and external regulations.
Facilitate legal communication between headquarters, regional subsidiaries, and the Singapore entity.
3. Contract & Document Management
Draft, review, and manage commercial contracts, templates, and internal legal documents.
Support contract lifecycle management and ensure legal consistency across agreements.
Provide day-to-day legal support on business operations, HR issues, and policy drafting.
4. Risk & Compliance Management
Identify and assess legal risks and propose risk mitigation strategies.
Monitor legal and regulatory developments, and ensure timely updates to internal policies.
Collaborate with internal teams to support audits and strengthen internal controls.
5. External Counsel & Regulatory Liaison
Select and manage relationships with external legal counsel.
Act as the point of contact for regulators, managing inquiries and ensuring appropriate filings.
Handle corporate secretarial duties for the Singapore entity.
6. Legal Training & Knowledge Sharing
Conduct regular legal and compliance training for employees across the region.
Prepare and distribute legal bulletins to share key regulatory updates.
Key Requirements
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Law; professional legal qualification strongly preferred.
Minimum 7 years of post-qualification experience in corporate or commercial law.
Strong expertise in competition law, anti-corruption, data privacy, and employment law.
Experience working at Japanese company is preferred.
Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
Proactive, independent, and capable of managing multiple priorities.
Willingness to travel as required.

Salary: SGD 7,000-10,000 + AWS + VB (depending on the individual performance)
