Job description

The Gateway Manager is responsible for overseeing the Airfreight Gateway Operations, ensuring the efficient and smooth handling of import and export operations, vendor management, and associated operations. This role requires strategic leadership to meet customer service requirements, comply with regulatory and airline policies, and support carrier management by procuring cost-effective freight rates and securing capacity.

The Challenges

Operational Management:

  • Oversee and manage the daily and weekly BSA and charter commitments and tendered volume to execute shipment in the most efficient and cost-effective manner.
  • Ensure adherence to SOPs, customer contracts, airline requirements
  • Ensure compliance at all times with all laws, sanctions, customs regulations, relevant to international transport and freight.
  • Ensure the smooth and efficient flow of airfreight transactions.
  • Ensure all milestones and system entries are completed accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Work closely with internal teams, warehouses, and service providers to optimize operational efficiency.
  • Monitor and improve service levels to ensure customer satisfaction and operational excellence.

Vendor & Carrier Management:

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with airlines, handling agents, customs authorities, and other vendors.
  • Negotiate competitive freight rates and secure capacity with carriers to meet demand.
  • Review and monitor contractor performance and award contracts based on cost efficiency, service levels, and compliance.
  • Ensure airline and vendor agreements are aligned with business objectives and customer expectations.
  • Ensure all operations comply with customs regulations, security protocols, and airline/government requirements.
  • Conduct regular audits and reviews to ensure compliance with internal and external regulations.
  • Implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and optimize processes.

Stakeholder & Client Management:

  • Act as a primary liaison between overseas offices/agents, and inter-department teams.
  • Provide regular operational updates to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure customer-specific SOPs and contractual obligations are met.
  • Support customer as required by management office or commercial teams

People Management & Development:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the airfreight gateway team to drive high performance.
  • Provide guidance, training, and support to ensure staff are well-equipped to meet operational demands.
  • Oversee resource planning and recruitment to maintain an efficient and capable workforce.
What It Takes
  • Solid experience in airfreight operations, gateway management and freight forwarding.
  • Strong knowledge of airfreight import/export processes, customs regulations, and airline requirements.
  • Experience in carrier negotiations, vendor management, and procurement of air freight capacity.
  • Proven track record in operational compliance, process improvement, and cost control.
  • Strong leadership and people management skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Problem-solving mindset with strong analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to multitask and work effectively under tight deadlines.
  • Proficiency in freight management systems and operational software.
