ACADEMIC FACULTY APPOINTMENT: The Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine

A Professor of Neuroscience and Mental Health (with Tenure) at Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine is expected to contribute to the development of research and teaching at the School. He/she is expected to undertake high quality internationally leading research in the Neuroscience and Mental Health Research Programme, in line with the overarching research strategy of Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, in addition to any other duties as assigned by the Vice Dean, Research and Dean.

Key Responsibilities

Job Purpose:

  1. The appointee will be expected to undertake high quality research in the area of Neuroscience and Mental Health, in line with the research strategy of the School and in conjunction with other recent appointments, obtain research funding and supervise research staff and students.
  2. The appointee is expected to undertake teaching and educational responsibilities for the training of medical students and postgraduate research students. Teaching methods will include extensive use of team-based learning and e-learning.
  3. The appointee is expected to contribute to integration of the science relating to the broad area of Neuroscience into the MBBS curriculum and to ensure the delivery of excellence in these areas, including the team-based delivery of the curriculum.

Primary Activities:

  1. Undertake high quality research activities by sustaining a personal research plan, developing innovative research proposals and funding bids, managing and undertaking research activities, publishing in international peer reviewed journals, reviewing manuscripts and grant applications when appropriate.
  2. Seek competitive grant and collaborative industry funding to develop a sustainable research programme.
  3. Contribute to, support and develop teaching and educational activity at undergraduate level and supervise undergraduate students.
  4. Contribute to, support and develop teaching and educational activity at undergraduate and graduate level and supervise undergraduate and graduate students.
  5. Develop and support research projects (including interdisciplinary research) with other faculty in the field of Neuroscience and Mental Health at LKCMedicine and across the wider NTU community, as well as with relevant clinical partners. These may include research that pertains all health aspects relating to Neuroscience and Mental Health, especially those directed at unravelling the mechanisms of learning and memory, and understanding how their disruption is linked to neurological disorders.
  6. Supervise and mentor junior faculty members and research staff at LKCMedicine.
  7. Participate in academic committees and meet other administrative requirements as appropriate.

Person Specification

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience:

  1. MBBS/MD and/or PhD degree(s)
  2. Relevant postdoctoral or clinical experience
  3. Significant experience and outstanding record of research and teaching with a high level of scientific achievement, productivity and impact in the field of Neuroscience and Mental Health
  4. Experience in working with learning and memory, and/or neurodegenerative or psychiatric disorders would be an advantage

Management and Teamwork:

  1. Ability to lead and work as part of a multidisciplinary team
  2. Ability to work co-operatively with medical and non-medical staff
  3. Ability to supervise research staff and students

Communicating and Influencing:

  1. Ability to communicate effectively with staff and students
  2. Ability to motivate others
  3. Strong presentation skills
  4. Ability to work in a team

Desirable attributes:

  1. Experience and desire to participate in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and training
  2. Demonstrated ability to develop teams and to create networks
  3. Fully conversant with patient-centred approach to modern medicine and the use of new technologies in both education and patient care
  4. Understanding of the academic and administrative needs of internationally recognised universities
  5. Ability to work in and develop teams and to create networks at both a national and international level
  6. Track record of having supervised graduate students to successful completion of PhDs

Time Commitment

The level of effort for this appointment is at 1.0 full time equivalent (FTE) employment.
