Job Description

The Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) is a young and innovative university with a unique educational structure and a mission to create a better world by design. At SUTD, technology and design education are paramount. Our pedagogy integrates engineering principles and design thinking throughout the undergraduate curriculum. More than just interdisciplinary, our courses bridge multiple dimensions of learning (D) in a unique 1-D, 2-D, and 3-D project-based framework.

This position offers an exciting and unique opportunity to contribute to and shape the materials and manufacturing design area within the Engineering Product Development (EPD) Pillar at SUTD. You will interact with leading stakeholders in Singapore’s engineering and innovation ecosystem, including governmental bodies, funding agencies, and industry partners who value design innovation and design thinking as key drivers of next-generation product development.

The successful candidate will contribute to teaching, curriculum development, and industry-engaged projects spanning:

  • Advanced and additive manufacturing
  • Materials design and processing
  • Digital manufacturing and Industry 4.0
  • Process–structure–property–performance relationships
  • Sustainable and scalable product realisation

The role is well-suited for candidates with deep technical expertise, industry or applied research experience, and a passion for hands‑on, design-driven education.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Teach undergraduate, graduate, and professional courses in materials science, advanced manufacturing, and engineering product development, with emphasis on hands‑on, project-based learning.
  • Design and deliver courses covering areas such as additive and digital manufacturing, materials processing and characterisation, nano‑and functional materials, manufacturing systems, Industry 4.0, and design‑for‑manufacturing.
  • Develop and continuously refresh curriculum content to reflect emerging trends in materials, manufacturing technologies, sustainability, and digital design‑manufacturing integration.
  • Mentor and supervise students at undergraduate, Master’s, and Doctoral levels on design projects and applied research, fostering innovation, entrepreneurship, and industry relevance.
  • Collaborate with faculty across pillars on interdisciplinary design and research projects that address real‑world engineering and societal challenges.
  • Engage industry partners, government agencies, and other stakeholders to build collaborations, support sponsored projects, and contribute to executive education and lifelong learning programmes.
  • Contribute to the broader academic community through service, outreach, and participation in curriculum and programme development within the Engineering Product Development Pillar.

The minimal qualifications for the faculty position include:

  • A proven record of teaching and/or research in areas such as materials design and processing, advanced or additive manufacturing, digital manufacturing, nano‑or functional materials, or related topics. Relevant industry or applied research experience in these domains will be considered an advantage.
  • A strong interest in advancing the teaching and learning of design and manufacturing processes within the context of engineering product development, including materials selection, process–structure–property relationships, prototyping, and product realisation.
  • A willingness to address complex, multidisciplinary problems at the intersection of materials, manufacturing, and design, potentially spanning application domains such as sustainability, healthcare, aerospace, energy, or smart manufacturing.
  • The ability to interact effectively both face‑to‑face and virtually with students, peers, and all relevant stakeholders.
  • The drive to network and engage with funding agencies, industry partners, and professional bodies, and to create impactful collaborations and continuous learning programmes.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • For the Senior Lecturer position, prior teaching experience is required, with preference for candidates who have experience in technology‑enabled learning, blended or active pedagogies, and/or prior involvement in engineering education research.

The candidate can have:

  • Experience in teaching in other educational environments, like executive education and/or lifelong learning.
  • Experience in designing and delivering short, medium and semester‑long courses in areas related to materials science, advanced or additive manufacturing, digital manufacturing, product development, or closely related topics.
  • A track record of advising Doctoral, Master, and undergraduate students in materials science, manufacturing, mechanical engineering, or related interdisciplinary areas.
  • Publications in reputable materials science, manufacturing, and applied engineering journals (e.g., Advanced Materials, ACS Nano, Nano Letters, Acta Materialia, International Materials Reviews, Additive Manufacturing, Advanced Engineering Materials, and similar) and conferences (e.g., MRS, TMS, AMUG, Solid Freeform Fabrication Symposium, ICMAT, and related venues).
