Job description

Area: Editing and Academic Publishing

MDPI is the largest open access publisher in the world, with over 400 journals across a wide range of disciplines. Our mission is to foster open science and scientific exchange by delivering high-quality peer-reviewed research to scholars around the globe. The English Editing Department works to ensure that all of MDPI’s manuscripts are published with clarity, consistency, and grammatical accuracy.

The Role: English Editor

We are looking for meticulous and dedicated individuals with a strong grasp of the English language and the nuances of academic writing to support scholars publishing their research. English Editors support academic research by editing the language of peer-reviewed papers to a publication-ready standard.

This is a full-time, in-office, entry-level position based in Singapore. Successful applicants undergo a probation period in which in-house training is provided by an experienced editor, after which there are opportunities to diversify the role and gain expertise in new areas.

Responsibilities

  • Edit scholarly articles submitted to MDPI journals to a publication-ready standard.
  • Apply knowledge of the English language and the context of the manuscript to make the English clear, consistent, and grammatically correct, communicating the author’s message without changing their voice unnecessarily.
  • Ensure manuscripts align with MDPI’s house rules.
  • Meet tight deadlines and hit targets with a high degree of consistency.
  • Take on additional roles, such as training colleagues within and outside of the department and editing corporate material.
  • Collaborate with members of Editorial and Production teams.

Experience And Skills

Essential criteria:

  • Only Singaporeans and SPR
  • A bachelor’s degree in any subject.
  • Expert knowledge of the English language.
  • Experience in editing, translating, or publishing.
  • Excellent time management and organisation skills.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of an international team.
  • Right to work in Singapore.

Desirable Skills And Experience

  • Professional experience in academic research, editing, or publishing.
  • Familiarity with LaTeX.
  • Experience working in an office environment.

Benefits

  • Training and Bonuses
    • Focused in-house training in editing scholarly content according to MDPI’s conventions by experienced editors.
    • Performance-based quarterly bonuses.
    • Clear progression pathways.
  • Competitive Leave Packages
    • Fourteen days of annual leave, in addition to medical leaves, which are prorated, after the successful completion of the first three months of work.
Application Process

Candidates must submit their CV and cover letter. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted and asked to complete two editing tests. If successful, candidates will be invited to an interview, which is the final stage of the application process.

  • Please attach your cover letter when applying for the role.

Remove any errors on your cover letter before applying. Your cover letter would be a pivotal differentiating factor between successful and unsuccessful applications for this role. Should you find difficulties attaching the cover letter, please email it to hr.singapore@mdpi.com
