Job description

The Library Assistant is responsible for working within the Elementary Library Program to support the learning, safety, and emotional well-being of children at Singapore American School (SAS). The actions listed below each category exemplify what elementary library assistants typically do but do not represent an exhaustive list.

Clerical Support

  • Manage ebook/audiobook resources - OverDrive, Follett, LibGuides, Padlet, etc., including helping patrons troubleshoot problems with technologies.
  • Import and update patron and item records on OverDrive. Handles original cataloging of print and digital materials in Chinese (characters and pinyin) and English.
  • Use relevant library software to manage all routine administrative and back office duties and run and share monthly/annual reports.
  • Support the librarians with acquiring print and online resources in Chinese and English.
  • Catalog resources in Chinese for easy access according to predefined archiving rules.
  • Repair library materials as required.
  • Shelve and shelf-read library materials.
Support for Learning

  • Interact with and guide students during activities in coordination with the associated librarians and classroom teachers.
  • Language proficiency in Mandarin Chinese and English to support students and parents needing associated help and direction within the library and across the literacy collection.
  • Ensure the library environment is well-organized, neat, and adequately stocked.
  • Develop effective relationships with children, parents, and teachers to support a conducive learning environment.
  • Communicate effectively and confidently with colleagues, teachers, administrators, students, and parents.
  • Participate fully in professional development opportunities made available by SAS.
Supervision and Student Care

  • Ensure patron safety within the library.
  • Assist children with safe passage, arriving and departing the library.
  • Assist teacher(s) and enforce protocols during times of emergency (e.g., during fire drills, lockdowns, and evacuations).

Skills And Qualifications Required

  • A diploma from a recognized Polytechnic is required.
  • Professional qualifications: Library and/or Information Science, preferably with a background in digital library and digital scholarship project implementation.
  • Professional working experience in a library as a library officer/library assistant.
  • Knowledge and experience in digital library applications, digital curation, and working with elementary school students preferred.
  • Proficiency in Google platform.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in Mandarin Chinese and English.
  • Positive work attitude and ability to take initiative.
  • Good interpersonal, communication (oral and written), and organizational skills, with the ability to work collaboratively and innovatively with library colleagues and the SAS community.
  • Experience working with elementary school children in an educational setting is highly preferred, willingness to be flexible and adaptive in a dynamic work environment.
