The Role

The Sustainable and Green Finance Institute (SGFIN) is a new university-level research institute at the National University of Singapore (NUS), supported by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and NUS. SGFIN aims to develop research capabilities in sustainable and green finance, provide thought leadership, and influence sustainability outcomes across the financial sector and economy.

This position is ideal for individuals interested in academic or industry research in the financial sector, particularly in sustainable, responsible, and green investing and valuation. Responsibilities include designing frameworks to analyze corporate sustainability efforts and performance to support decision-making in corporate, financial, and societal contexts.

There are no teaching duties, and the candidate will have opportunities to develop their research portfolio.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Design research projects in collaboration with the Institute's Directors (Prof. Sumit Agarwal, A.Prof Johan Sulaeman, A.Prof Weina Zhang) and research affiliates.
  • Take ownership of research projects, ensuring timely and within-budget completion, meeting project specifications and targets.
  • Identify resources, prepare high-level project plans, and manage project timelines and staffing needs.
  • Develop research hypotheses.
  • Collect and organize corporate financial and sustainability disclosures.
  • Gather information on government policies and regulations related to sustainability.
  • Analyze existing frameworks and develop more comprehensive ones through qualitative and quantitative methods.
  • Monitor project progress and intervene as necessary to ensure successful completion.
  • Manage project deliverables, ensuring quality and timeliness.
  • Coordinate with research and industry stakeholders, providing progress updates and managing expectations.
  • Prepare results for industry communication, presentations, and academic publications.
  • For Research Fellow roles: supervise research analysts and associates.
  • Collaborate with the SGFIN team to support its objectives.
Requirements
  • Preferred academic background: finance, accounting, economics, business, sustainable/green finance, or related fields. A bachelor's degree is required; a master's is preferred, and a PhD is required for Research Fellow roles.
  • Basic understanding of the financial sector, markets, corporate financial statements, and credit risk analysis.
  • Knowledge of sustainable economics or finance is highly desirable.
  • Skills in quantitative analysis, econometrics, and experience with statistical software and empirical research methods.
  • Proactive problem-solving skills.
  • Strong time management, planning, and project management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deliver results on time.
  • Flexible, positive attitude, and team-oriented mindset.
  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills, both verbal and written.
