Job description

NLCS (Singapore) is looking for an enthusiastic, highly qualified and inspirational Primary School Leader to oversee the day to day running of our Lower School (Grades 2 to 5). The Deputy Head of Junior School (Head of Lower School) should be able to think strategically, respond to the school’s changing needs and initiate improvements and developments, particularly in his/her areas of responsibility and expertise.

The Deputy Head of Junior School (Head of Lower School) will assist and report directly to the Vice Principal (Head of Junior School) and will take responsibility for all aspects of pastoral care in the Lower School. He / she will also be responsible for supporting members of the Junior School in all appropriate ways, ensuring that they work together as a cohesive and collegiate team in effectively addressing the aims and priorities of the School.

The Deputy Head of Junior School, (Head of Lower School) will offer support to the learning and pastoral needs of individual pupils, in keeping with the School’s pastoral policy and the School’s aims and values. All members of staff are also expected to be involved in pastoral care within the School community, usually in the role of form tutor or co-tutor, and also to contribute to the extra-curricular life of the School.

Supporting and assisting the Vice Principal (Head of Junior School)

General Responsibilities:

  • Deputising for the Vice Principal (Head of Junior School), when required
  • Responsible for all matters relating to pastoral care within the department and creating constructive links with the PSE programme
  • Advising the Principal and Vice Principal (Head of Junior School) and other members of the Senior Team, on general issues concerning children of the Lower School
  • Ensuring effective policies / procedures with regards to Child Protection and Bullying are implemented in the Lower School
  • Providing induction for new students
  • Ensuring the physical and mental well-being of the students
  • Ensuring the assessment, recording and reporting of student progress
  • Playing an active part in the collaborative working of the Junior School Leadership team
  • Contributing to the day to day management of the Junior School
  • Teaching in the area of designated subject specialism / other areas as required

Specific Responsibilities:

The role of the Deputy Head, (Head of the Lower School) is to be responsible for ensuring that all students enjoy the best possible opportunities and support to fulfil their individual potential in their academic, personal and co-curricular pursuits.

As the needs of the school change over time, these duties may be varied and the post holder will be expected to take on any additional responsibility the Head of Junior School may reasonably require.

In respect of the Lower School, the Deputy Head (Head of Lower School) will be responsible for areas such as:

  • Preparing and overseeing all duty, assembly and other rotas
  • Ensuring the smooth day to day running of the Lower School
  • Line managing the Lower School staff
  • Overseeing arrangements for student discipline and welfare in the Lower School
  • Responsibility for the continuous improvement of educational provision, administration and management of the Lower School
  • Ensuring the effective use of resources to support teaching and learning (including the use of ICT)
  • Ensuring that marking and assessment across the Junior School are of the highest standard, and that they are effective in guiding students to further improvement
  • Dealing with day to day parental concerns, queries and complaints for Lower School
  • Construction and maintenance of the Lower School timetable
  • Overseeing and organising extra-curricular activities
  • Developing and organising special events e.g. Concerts, Open Days, Founder’s Day
  • Taking assemblies when required
  • Mentoring new Lower School Staff
  • Monitoring and tracking students’ progress within the programme, and co-ordinating interventions when necessary
  • Responsibility for preparing students for transition to the Senior School
  • Assisting the Head of Junior School in the recruitment and appointment of new staff
  • Managing the induction programme for all new staff with the Deputy Head, (Head of First School)
  • Managing the staff appraisal programme of Lower School staff.
  • Reviewing and updating the Junior School Staff Handbook, annually

Safeguarding

  • Abide by the School safeguarding policy and keep abreast of any changes
  • Have regard for, and promote, the need to safeguard students’ wellbeing, maintaining awareness of cultural differences and related matters when dealing with students.
