Job description

The Data Center team designs and operates some of the most sophisticated electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and HVAC systems globally. Facilities Technicians at Google data centers operate, monitor, and support physical facilities conditions. Responsibilities include heating and cooling of air and water, power supply, generators, UPS systems, electrical distribution, and control and monitoring systems. They regularly inspect, maintain, and repair various data center systems such as piping and electrical or mechanical components. They also assist senior technicians by reading blueprints/schematics, conducting system tours, and assessing system health.

As advocates for best practices, they develop creative approaches to reduce operational costs while enhancing overall data center efficiency. They ensure environmental and safety standards are met, quickly identify problems, and perform repairs. In emergencies or abnormal conditions, they manage performance issues and outages to minimize recovery time.

In this role, you will operate, monitor, and support physical facilities with a focus on safety and 24x7 availability, including air-conditioning, cooling water, power supply, generators, UPS systems, electrical distribution, and building management systems. You will inspect, maintain, and repair various systems, read blueprints/schematics, conduct tours, and assess system operation. You will also develop creative solutions to reduce operational costs and improve efficiency, ensuring safety and environmental standards are maintained, and addressing issues promptly.

  • Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical equipment in a data center environment.
  • Prepare and execute operational procedures, respond to work requests or failures, and provide technical expertise. Coordinate vendor support and support project implementations such as site acceptance tests and defect inspections.
  • Enhance Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) and Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), improve operational efficiency, and minimize environmental impact. Conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and implement recovery and prevention measures.
  • Track and analyze operational data to identify trends. Adhere to safety regulations related to infrastructure operation.
  • Work 12-hour rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays, and be adaptable to varying outdoor temperatures.
Minimum qualifications
  • Associate's degree, trade school certification, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 2 years of electrical experience in industrial or commercial settings, including electrical testing or distribution.
  • Ability to lift/move up to 23kg (50lb) of equipment and perform physical tasks such as bending, kneeling, climbing, and pushing/pulling.
  • Willingness to work non-standard hours, including weekends and holidays.
Preferred qualifications
  • Electrical Technician's License.
  • 4+ years of experience in operating and maintaining mission-critical facilities like data centers, hospitals, or power plants.
  • Experience troubleshooting electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and control systems, including feeders, transformers, generators, switchgear, UPS, ATS/STS, PDU/PMM, chillers, air handling units, and CRAC units.
  • Ability to learn quickly and respond effectively during normal and emergency operations.
