What the role is

The Singapore Botanic Gardens (SBG) is one of the oldest tropical botanical gardens and one of only three botanic gardens in the world inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The SBG is a Division of the National Parks Board, the statutory agency responsible for managing greenery and biodiversity in Singapore.

The Forest and Tree Research Branch of SBG aims to advance forest ecology and tree research and their applications to advance forest and urban tree management. Specifically, its Environmental Ecology section will coordinate and conduct biophysical and biogeochemical studies in natural and urban forest ecosystems to:

  • Guide forest management and restoration
  • Optimize contributions of plants to improve urban environmental conditions

What you will be working on

As part of the research team at the Forest and Tree Branch, you will work with researchers to ensure successful delivery of projects.

Specifically, you would:

  • Carry out field work in both the forest and urban settings, including carrying of equipment and walking long distances
  • Quantify the site characteristics of sampling points
  • Perform data analysis and translating research findings
  • Support research project management
  • Provide administrative support to the Forest and Tree Branch, as assigned

What we are looking for

  • Areas of Studies in Geography, Forest Ecology, or related field. Relevant postgraduate qualifications would be an advantage.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proactive, independent, and able to work effectively in a team
  • Data analytics, including the use of one or more scientific computing languages (e.g., Python, R)
  • Deploying environmental sensors for research purposes and/or Internet-of-Things applications
  • Using drones and/or LIDAR to quantify site characteristics
  • Collecting soil samples for nutrient analyses
  • Quantifying sap flow of trees

Successful candidates will be hired on an 11-month employment contract.
