The role of an academic at the Singapore Maritime Academy is both challenging and deeply rewarding. We are seeking individuals who not only possess comprehensive knowledge and practical experience in the maritime industry but also demonstrate a genuine passion for nurturing and guiding students.
As a Senior Lecturer, you will play a pivotal role in shaping students' competencies in marine engineering, aligned with evolving technology roadmaps. This position involves supervising student projects, designing, and delivering industry-relevant CET courses at advanced levels. You will lead shipboard and shore-based internship placements through robust industry engagement. Additionally, you will spearhead the development and delivery of PET and CET modules, provide mentorship to junior staff, and actively contribute to consultancy and applied research initiatives, driving innovation and excellence in maritime education and training.

What you will be working on:

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design, review, and development of teaching and assessment materials, and facilitate learning for Pre-Employment Training (PET) and Continuing Education and Training (CET) students.
  • Drive collaboration with industry partners to enhance learning through innovative initiatives such as industry field trips, student-industry projects, internships, and overseas programs.
  • Ensure that new/existing teaching curriculum modules are aligned with the Standards of Training, Certification, and Watch-keeping (STCW) Convention and the practices of the maritime industry.
  • Serve as an advisory role and provide mentorship and guidance to the Technical Executives to ensure equipment and training facilities are updated and operationally-ready for practical training sessions.
  • Serve as a consultant / expert / specialist in critical maritime domains and provide guidance and train staff in technical domain job scope.
  • Actively participate in Internal and External Quality Maritime Education and Training (QMET) audits.
  • Provide technical leadership (or training) in specific working practices or specific areas of work for members of the team, co-ordinate work as a team leader and oversee the quality of the work in progress.
  • Strengthen SMA’s network with the maritime and offshore industry partners by coordinating or organizing maritime activities and seminars.
  • Support polytechnic and school events and successfully perform tasks assigned by management in coordinating staff and students’ activities at school or institutional level.

What we are looking for:

Requirements:

  • Holds the Marine Engineering Officer Class 1 Certificate of Competency issued by MPA or relevant authorities.
  • At least 8 years of working experience within the maritime industry.
  • Self-driven, independent, and possess readiness to work as a team.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced changing environment.
  • Passionate about education and possess a strong interest in teaching and mentoring students.
  • Demonstrates leadership and supervisory skills, including the ability to provide technical leadership and team coordination.
  • People-oriented individual with good interpersonal, written, and communication skills.

Successful candidate will be offered a 2-year contract in the first instance.
