We are seeking for the position to start in as soon as possible.

Job Description: Design & Technology Teaching Assistant

Reporting to: PA to the High School Principal and SLT / High School Curriculum Office Manager

Overall Purpose:

  • Support for Class Teachers: Collaborating with teachers to deliver engaging and effective lessons, and providing support to individual students or groups as needed.

  • Student Welfare: Ensuring the well-being of all children within the Design & Technology environment, promoting a safe and positive learning atmosphere.

  • Academic Achievement: Supporting students in achieving their academic targets by providing guidance, assistance, and encouragement.

  • Direct Support to the Design & Technology Department: Assisting with the daily operations of the department, including preparing materials, organising workshops, and maintaining equipment.

In essence, the Design & Technology Teaching Assistant plays a vital role in facilitating a productive learning environment where both the practical and theoretical aspects of Design & Technology can flourish.

General Duties & Responsibilities:

Supporting Learning & Instruction

  • Support students during practical lessons, ensuring they adhere to health and safety regulations and providing individual assistance as needed.

  • Assist the Design & Technology teachers in preparing materials and resources for lessons, including cutting, gluing, preparing jigs, molds, patterns, and visual aids.

  • Assist with practical demonstrations and help students with ICT work using Techsoft 3D Design or Fusion 360.

  • Assist with the preparation of materials for examinations and external assessments.

  • Accompany staff and students on trips out of school during normal working hours.

  • Be aware of pupils’ individual needs and equal access to opportunities to learn and develop.

  • Regularly liaise with HoD and teaching staff to review the support and interventions required.

  • Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety, security and confidentiality reporting all concerns to an appropriate person to ensure pupils’ wellbeing

Equipment and Materials

  • Help prepare and organize materials and resources for projects prior to lessons, ensuring the correct quantities for the class.

  • Assist in sourcing and ordering materials and sundries as required under the direction of the head of the department.

  • Assist in the preparation of materials and displays for school events relating to the department as requested by the head of the department.

  • Assist with the organization of Design & Technology exhibitions.

Workshop Support

  • Assist in setup and tidying up of workshops and material storage. Check that tools and equipment are accounted for after practical sessions.

  • Check at the end of the day that all power has been isolated and rooms are tidy.

  • Arrange tools and equipment for focused demonstrations.

General

  • From time to time, you may be asked to work additional hours in addition to your normal working hours to meet the needs of the school. The school will give you as much notice as possible, and you will be paid/recompensed for such work. Examples where this might be required are for example; relevant key school events such as Open House, after-school events, clubs, training, etc.

  • Provide support for extracurricular activities within normal working hours.

Health & Safety (Supporting Role)

  • Report any problems or defects that may cause a health and safety hazard to the Head or Teacher of Design & Technology.

  • Assist with daily maintenance checks of machinery, cleaning, oiling, and changing or resetting blades as and when required.

  • Assist with maintaining log sheets for monitoring purposes.

  • Support the organization and implementation of the annual machinery maintenance by contractors.

  • Assist with carrying out checks and replenishing first aid kits and eyewash stations.

  • Support the safe treatment and disposal of used materials, including hazardous substances, and respond to actual potential hazards. Assist in organizing, storing, and maintaining records of materials and other chemicals and equipment in accordance with academic policy and statutory requirements.

  • Update risk assessments as needed and ensure that they are understood and applied.

Normal working hours: 7.45 am to 4.45 pm from Monday to Friday.

Salary Range: From $4,190 to $5,843

Essential

Qualifications

  • Good standard of general education, including English and Math.

Experience

  • An interest in and aptitude for practical and technical skills.

  • Experience of, or willingness to learn about, operating and maintaining machinery.

  • Awareness of safe working practices in relation to the handling and usage of tools and equipment.

Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

  • Computer literate and proficient in Microsoft 365 or Google for Education applications.

  • Ability to understand the school’s values and a desire to promote an excellent image of the school.

  • Understanding and supportive of young people.

  • Ability to prioritize and organise your own workload.

  • Collaborative with teachers and students.

  • An awareness of the importance of confidentiality and data protection.

  • Formal education and training in Design & Technology related areas.
