About the Role

This role reports directly to the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of SPH Media.

The Director of Operations is responsible for leading and overseeing the key operational and technological functions in SPH Media, ensuring high quality and efficient management of corporate and commercial IT infrastructure, digital products and solutions, radio transmission technology and infrastructure, and shared multimedia production capabilities.

Overseeing five key functions with a total staff strength of about 1000 staff across IT, Digital, Production, Radio and Shared Multimedia Studios, the candidate will work closely with other members of the SPH Media senior management to drive strategic alignment, innovation and efficiency in the production and distribution of media and content across SPH’s omnichannel network.

The candidate will play a pivotal role in driving ops-tech integration across SPH Media and its diverse range of news and media products, spanning printing operations, IT and digital operations, as well as multimedia audio-visual operations. This requires the candidate to have a deep understanding of SPH Media’s strategies and role as public service media, as well as the potential for technology in its various forms to augment and drive progress of the news media business operations.

The candidate must bear a wide-ranging and deep understanding and expertise of the current technological trends relevant to the news media industry. He or she must be a strategic thinker and people-oriented leader, a strong business acumen with a clear view of the organisation’s mission.

Key Responsibilities

1. IT & Digital Development

  • Oversee the IT & Digital Strategies, ensuring robust, secure, and scalable infrastructure and digital development to support media strategy and operations.

  • Lead the management of digital platforms, content management systems (CMS), cloud services, and cybersecurity initiatives.

  • Coordinate and lead the scaling of automation and AI solutions to enhance content production and operational efficiency.

2. Radio Transmission & Broadcast Technology

  • Oversee operation of radio transmission networks

  • Optimize broadcast technology, ensuring seamless integration between traditional and digital platforms

  • Lead the maintenance and upgrading of transmission systems, studio equipment, and outside broadcasting units

3. Shared Multimedia Production Operations

  • Oversee operations of shared multimedia production capabilities

  • Ensure optimal utilization of production facilities, editing suites, and live streaming infrastructure.

4. Strategic Leadership & Innovation

  • Develop and execute an operations roadmap aligned with the company’s business objectives and industry trends.

  • Orchestrate, and where appropriate, lead transformation initiatives, adopting emerging technologies to better audience outcomes.

  • Implement cost-effective strategies to maximize efficiency while maintaining high quality and audience reach.

5. Vendor & Stakeholder Management

  • Negotiate contracts and manage relationships with technology providers, broadcast equipment vendors, and service partners.

  • Ensure regulatory compliance with broadcasting, IT security, and media content standards.

  • Represent the company in industry forums and strategic partnerships.

6. Governance, Budgeting & Risk Management

  • Oversee financial planning, budget allocations, and operational expenditures across operations functions

  • Develop and implement governance processes and risk management strategies, ensuring business continuity and crisis preparedness.

Who we are looking for

1. Working Experience

  • 15+ years of experience in operations and/or technology leadership roles, with at least 5 years in an executive-level role leading strategy development and planning, operations, and systems governance

  • Proven track record of developing and executing strategies through working with or leading operational teams that drive impactful business growth and innovation.

  • Extensive experience in managing cross-functional teams and large-scale operations and technology projects.

  • Relevant experience in news, media, or digital agency experience is an advantage.

  • Experienced in managing teams that scale and are comfortable across on-premises as well as hybrid cloud environments.

2. Skills, Competencies & Personality Traits

  • Excellent leadership and organisational abilities with a problem-solving attitude.

  • Excellent communicator and collaborator at all levels, with senior stakeholders and staff, articulating vision and outcomes to build alignment.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop strong relationships across the organisation to drive alignment of digital direction with business objectives.

  • Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate technical teams.

  • Deep technical expertise in software development, cloud computing, data management, and infrastructure with knowledge of emerging technologies

  • Experience with security protocols, risk management, and compliance.
