Director, HNW Underwriting

The opportunity

We are seeking a high-performing individual to provide guidance and assist Underwriting Management with research and training of Underwriting Staff. The candidate will take the lead on high-scope and complex Underwriting department projects.

Responsibilities:

1. Manage a team focused on underwriting.
2. Provide leadership and direction in hiring, professional development, and training of technical underwriting professionals.
3. Manage all aspects of potentially unlimited total line in close association with reinsurers.
4. Select and classify risk according to company philosophy and standards.
5. Participate in and provide leadership for projects in the Underwriting Department.
6. Serve as an information resource for underwriters at all levels.
7. Balance standards of turnaround with a higher level of service and professionalism.
8. Analyze and interpret medical, non-medical, and financial information.
9. Make decisions within approval limits.
10. Ensure complete and appropriate underwriting requirements are met while practicing effective expense management.
11. Manage reinsurance processes to maximize capacity and avoid gridlock.
12. Lead the diversification process on the largest cases.
13. Manage referral and consultation processes for timely and accurate decisions.
14. Oversee mortality on preferred business blocks to meet pricing and mortality expectations.
15. Ensure consistency and adherence to departmental guidelines through referral processes.
16. Participate in the development, implementation, and management of new business initiatives.
17. Engage in ongoing training and professional development of the underwriting team.
18. Act as a resource and mentor, especially at the consultant level.
19. Champion appeals and business decisions alongside the Chief Underwriter.
20. Maintain positive relationships with internal and external partners.

What we are looking for

• Minimum 15 years of underwriting experience.
• Applicable underwriting and insurance designations preferred.
• Expert knowledge of medical, non-medical, and financial underwriting principles.
• Deep understanding of estate, business, and insurance planning tools.
• Current knowledge of political, economic, financial, and legislative impacts on clients.
• Expertise in the company's insurance product portfolio and understanding of client needs.
• Expertise in reinsurance, treaties, agreements, and capacity.
• Exceptional priority management skills under deadlines.
• Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Effective presentation skills.
• Strong communication skills.
• Customer service orientation.
• Knowledge of project management skills.
• Expertise in insurance contract law and legislative requirements.
