Overview
Costing Engineer / QS Engineer
The Costing Engineer / QS Engineer is responsible for preparing accurate cost estimates, Bill of Quantities (BQ), and man-hour calculations, while consulting suppliers to ensure material specifications and suitability for projects. The role works closely with Project Managers, Design, and Procurement teams to provide detailed cost analysis, support pricing strategies, and track project expenditures.
Responsibilities
Cost Estimation & Analysis
- Prepare detailed cost estimates for projects, including materials, labor, and subcontractor services.
- Develop Bill of Quantities (BQ) based on drawings, specifications, and project scope.
- Calculate man-hour requirements for various project activities and trades.
- Analyze historical cost data to improve estimation accuracy and identify cost-saving opportunities.
Material Consultation & Procurement Support
- Consult suppliers to confirm material specifications, quality, and suitability for project requirements.
- Recommend materials and alternatives based on cost, availability, and performance.
- Support procurement with accurate cost breakdowns and supplier technical input.
Budgeting & Cost Control
- Assist in preparing project budgets and monitor actual costs against planned budgets.
- Identify cost variances and recommend corrective actions to management.
Pricing & Commercial Support
- Develop and maintain pricing models for projects, products, and services.
- Provide cost input for bids, proposals, and client quotations.
- Support negotiations with clients, suppliers, and subcontractors based on cost analysis.
Reporting & Documentation
- Maintain organized records of cost estimates, BQs, man-hour calculations, supplier consultations, and approvals.
- Prepare regular cost reports, dashboards, and summaries for management.
- Support management in financial decision-making with accurate cost insights.
Collaboration & Compliance
- Work closely with Project Managers, Design, Procurement, and Finance teams to ensure accurate cost tracking.
- Ensure compliance with internal policies, accounting standards, and regulatory requirements.
Requirements
- Degree/Diploma in Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Construction, or related discipline.
- 2–5 years of experience in costing, estimating, or quantity surveying.
- Strong analytical skills with proficiency in cost estimation tools, Excel, and project software.
- Knowledge of Bill of Quantities preparation, man-hour estimation, and material specification evaluation.
- Strong communication and negotiation skills to liaise with suppliers, internal teams, and stakeholders.
- Detail-oriented, proactive, and capable of problem-solving.
