Job Description

General Summary

The Trainer will develop and deliver education and training to coders, auditors, and CDS staff to ensure compliance with health system guidelines and regulatory agencies (OIG, HSCRC, CMS, NCCI, OCG). Reporting to the Manager of Training, the Trainer will support coding compliance and documentation improvement efforts. Responsibilities include participating in coding roundtables, updating the Internal Coding Manual, and maintaining the UMMS Coding Library with documents and web parts.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

  1. Conduct training sessions tailored to the learners' understanding levels.
  2. Provide onboarding and cross-training for new associates per policies.
  3. Train staff on systems like 3M encoder and analyzer, including remote workstation training.
  4. Offer ongoing education on coding issues identified through audits, updates, and new procedures.
  5. Facilitate new hire orientation and monitor training progress.
  6. Update staff on regulatory changes affecting coding and CDI practices.
  7. Communicate with managers on staff readiness and areas for improvement.
  8. Prepare reports on training effectiveness and areas needing improvement.
  9. Schedule and coordinate training sessions with the Manager of Training Education.
  10. Train staff on coding regulations and health system guidelines, including cross-training.
  11. Complete vendor applications for CEU accreditation from AHIMA and AAPC.
  12. Ensure compliance with ethical coding standards and guidelines.
  13. Participate in seminars and in-services to stay current on coding issues.

Qualifications

  • Associates degree in a related field or 4 years of relevant experience; Bachelor's preferred.
  • At least 3 years of ICD-10-CM/PCS coding and related training experience.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in PowerPoint and MS Office.
  • Certifications such as CCS, CIC, AHIMA ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainer, CCDS, or CDIP preferred.
