1. Design & Technical Planning
- Prepare and review detailed design drawings and specifications for utility installations.
- Conduct route surveys and topographic studies to determine optimal pipe and conduit paths.
- Calculate pipe sizing, slopes, depths, and materials based on flow requirements and utility standards.
- Coordinate clash detection and ensure separation and clearance between utilities (sewer, water, electrical, telecom).
2. Site Investigation & Feasibility
- Perform site assessments, soil testing, and geotechnical evaluations.
- Identify existing underground utilities and assess constraints.
- Provide input on constructability and feasibility of proposed utility alignments.
3. Permitting & Regulatory Compliance
- Prepare documentation for permitting with local municipalities and utility authorities.
- Ensure compliance with design codes (e.g., AWWA, ASTM, NEC, NESC) and local standards.
- Support environmental impact assessments and mitigation measures.
4. Construction Support & Supervision
- Provide technical guidance during trenching, laying, jointing, and backfilling.
- Ensure correct grades, alignments, and bedding for all utility pipes and conduits.
- Oversee hydrostatic tests, pressure tests, mandrel testing, and telecom duct integrity verification.
- Respond to RFIs (Requests for Information) and approve shop drawings and field adjustments.
5. Coordination & Utility Interface
- Coordinate with other engineering disciplines, contractors, and utility companies to avoid conflicts.
- Work with electrical and telecom engineers to ensure correct conduit sizing and layout.
- Participate in utility coordination meetings and adjust designs based on field conditions.
6. Quality Assurance & Inspections
- Monitor construction for compliance with plans, specifications, and quality standards.
- Conduct and document inspections for trench depth, compaction, pipe alignment, and testing.
- Verify as-built conditions and prepare redline drawings for final documentation.
7. Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain detailed engineering records, test results, inspection logs, and change notices.
- Prepare progress reports, construction documentation, and handover packages.
- Assist in preparing O&M manuals and final drawing submissions.
8. Safety & Risk Management
- Identify engineering risks related to trench safety, water infiltration, or utility conflicts.
- Ensure safety protocols are incorporated into designs (e.g., shoring requirements, utility depth standards).
- Support project safety audits and risk mitigation planning.
