Job description

Position Objective and Summary

The Chief Mechanic / Engineer plays a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of all vessel machinery and engineering systems. This position is responsible for the maintenance, operation, and inspection readiness of onboard mechanical, electrical, and electronic equipment. The role also involves compliance with maritime safety standards and effective management of fuel and equipment inventories.


Main Tasks / Activities / Responsibilities

  • Oversee the entire marine engineering department onboard the vessel.
  • Manage the operation and maintenance of all machinery and engineering systems.
  • Monitor barge trim and vessel stability.
  • Detect, diagnose, and resolve mechanical and electrical malfunctions.
  • Plan, schedule, and supervise maintenance and repair activities.
  • Manage fuel, lubrication, and ballast operations, ensuring accurate inventory of consumables and spare parts.
  • Ensure engine room readiness for inspection by port authorities and regulatory bodies.
  • Implement emergency and damage control procedures; respond promptly to onboard emergencies.
  • Maintain safe operation of electrical and electronic equipment, and oversee troubleshooting and restoration processes.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant maritime legislation, safety protocols, and environmental protection measures.
  • Any other ad-hod jobs assigned.

Job Requirements (Education, Certifications, Experience, Soft Skills)

  • Diploma or Degree in Marine Engineering or a related discipline preferred.
  • Preferably holds a valid Chief Engineer Certificate of Competency.
  • Passed required color vision and medical fitness tests.
  • Proven experience in marine engineering or mechanical systems onboard vessels.
  • Strong leadership and crisis management skills.
  • Ability to work independently in high-pressure environments.
  • Effective communication and coordination skills with cross-functional teams.
