Laboratory Supervisor / Chemist Job Description

The Laboratory Supervisor / Chemist is responsible for overseeing laboratory operations, ensuring quality and safety standards are met, and managing the testing processes for chemical analysis.

  1. Perform sample analysis, record results, and validate findings.
  2. Provide guidelines and documentation on chemical testing procedures.
  3. Draft and prepare technical reports, test methods, and analysis findings for reference and follow-up actions.
  4. Educate and guide technicians and personnel-in-charge to ensure proper handling of processes, methods, and SOPs.
  5. Verify the authenticity and accuracy of laboratory reports and findings, endorse analysis certificates when required.
  6. Maintain, evaluate, and update procedures; communicate revisions to staff.
  7. Implement safety compliance measures in consultation with safety personnel, report unsafe acts, and propose corrective actions.
  8. Manage laboratory equipment, ensure proper maintenance and calibration in line with standards.
  9. Manage and revise quality assurance and control programs.
  10. Evaluate chemical data and provide professional recommendations.
  11. Supervise the preparation and standardization of chemical reagents.
  12. Ensure replenishment and proper inventory of consumables, reagents, and equipment.
  13. Train and ensure the competency of new staff members.
  14. Support analysis during staff absence and perform exigent analyses as needed.
  15. Ensure compliance with governmental regulations and contractual requirements.
  16. Supervise and train staff, monitor performance, and provide feedback.
  17. Oversee testing procedures, documentation, and reporting accuracy.
  18. Manage confidentiality, integrity, and safety aspects of laboratory operations.
  19. Calibrate and troubleshoot analytical equipment.
  20. Perform routine sample analysis, validate results, handle audits, and write CAPA reports.
  21. Update test methods and instructions as necessary.
  22. Investigate unusual results and refer for further analysis.
  23. Assist in method development, PT testing, and internal audits.
  24. Manage laboratory reports, inventory, and SOP reviews.
  25. Ensure equipment calibration schedules are followed and meet SAC-SINGLAS standards.
  26. Oversee all testing activities within the laboratory.
  27. Maintain laboratory cleanliness and safety standards.
  28. Lead by example, promoting EHS, integrity, compliance, and ethics.
  29. Perform other duties as assigned by the Lab Manager.

Qualifications:

  • Relevant experience in the petrochemical industry preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and/or Sciences.
  • Effective communication skills in English, including report writing and permit preparation.
  • Willingness to work outdoors and in confined areas (tanks).
  • At least 2 years of related work experience.
  • Ability to work in shifts and overtime if required.
  • Good safety awareness, responsibility, discipline, and a proactive attitude.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
