Badminton Junior Performance Head Coach

We are seeking a suitable candidate to fill the full-time position of Badminton Junior Performance Head Coach to prepare our developmental student-athletes towards national team representation at international competitions and the Major Games (Southeast Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, World Championships and Olympic Games).

The appointed Youth Head Coach will be responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating the training and competition plans for student-athletes towards high performance in sports, based on long-term athlete development principles. This will include student-athletes in SBA’s National Youth set-up, i.e. Junior Performance Programme (JPP). The appointed Head Coach will prepare quarterly reports on the overall performance and progress of the various teams. In addition, the appointed Head Coach will conduct regular reviews with each national youth shuttler to discuss performance progress and goals. He/She will work with the Singapore Sports School’s (SSP) General Manager, SBA Head Performance and Pathway, SBA National Training Squad coaches, fellow coaches, school staff and external stakeholders to achieve the sporting goals and holistic development of the student-athletes.

The appointed Head Coach will ensure that the plans utilise all available resources including relevant support services (sport science, medicine and conditioning) and travel to relevant domestic and international tournaments as required.

The Head Coach will also work with the Junior Performance Director and SSP General Manager to recruit suitable student-athletes to JPP, mentor the team of JPP coaches and establish good relationships with stakeholders such as SBA’s High-Performance Team. The candidate for Head Coach must have strong leadership and experience in leading and mentoring a team of coaches.

Reporting Structure

  • Jointly to the Junior Performance Director (Singapore Badminton Association) and Assistant Director (Singapore Sports School), or person assigned by the pre-named people, to carry out all roles & responsibilities in consultation with the reporting personnel

Main roles and responsibilities

  • Student-Athlete Recruitment and Development
  • Establish, implement and evaluate the annual training and competition plans for student athletes (ages 12-17 years-old) in the Junior Performance Programme (JPP) towards high performance in sports, based on long term athlete development principles
  • Establish and guide your team of coaches to implement effective monitoring and assessment strategies and tools to assess performance progression of all student-athletes under your charge, including the use of data analytics and sports science in the training programme
  • Work with the Junior Performance Director, SSP General Manager, and your team of coaches in talent identification and selection of aspiring national shuttlers
  • Work with HPSI in testing and integration of sports science into the training and specific programmes
  • Work with coaches from Regional Training Centres to develop and recruit sporting talents into JPP
  • Cultivate a conducive environment within JPP to inculcate values and socio-emotional competencies for all-rounded development of student-athletes to become learned champions with character
  • Build a strong culture of trust and support among the coaches and student-athletes
  • Lead the student-athletes in local and overseas competitions as required

Effective Communication and Partnerships

  • Lead and mentor the team of coaches
  • Work closely with the SSP General Manager, SBA’s Head Performance and Pathway, SBA’s National Training Squad coaches, and HPSI staff.
  • Establish good relationships with stakeholders such as SBA’s High-Performance Team
  • Demonstrate empathy in the management of student-athletes while working with relevant stakeholders
  • Ensure regular communication with stakeholders such as teachers, mentors, boarding colleagues and parents to ensure holistic development and management of student-athletes

  • Promote and instill core values such as discipline, resilience, teamwork, and sportsmanship
  • Foster a positive and respectful team culture that supports holistic athlete development

Competencies

  • At least 10 years’ experience of competitive coaching with elite and developmental youth athletes. Able to lead, mentor and develop coaches to increase their capabilities and deliver a higher standard of coaching
  • Able to work as part of a team while showing initiative and independence in delivering the assigned duties
  • Possess the equivalent of the BWF Level 2 and/or an international badminton coaching qualification recognised by BWF
  • Fulfil requirements to obtain National Registry of Coaches (NROC) membership and Ministry of Education (MOE) registration (for foreigners, to obtain NROC within 3 months)
  • Displays good understanding of sports science as applied to elite youth sports based on long term athlete development principles
  • Keen understanding of the quality Daily Training Environment needed for the development of student-athletes
  • Competent in values inculcation and character development for student-athletes
  • Good planning, administrative and organizational skills, with progressive knowledge, skills and attitude towards the use of data analytics in the training programme
  • Able to communicate well in English with student-athletes, parents and other stakeholders. Experience working within a school environment would be an advantage

This will include student-athletes in STTA’s National Youth set-up, i.e., the School-Within-School (SWS) Programme in SSP, Junior Development Squad (JDS) and Youth Training Squad (YTS). The appointed Youth Head Coach will prepare quarterly reports on the overall performance and progress of the various teams. In addition, the appointed Youth Head Coach will conduct regular review with each national youth paddler to discuss performance progress and goals. He/She will work with the SSP General Manager, STTA Senior High Performance Manager, fellow coaches, school staff and external stakeholders to achieve the sporting goals and holistic development of the student-athletes.

The appointed Youth Head Coach will ensure that the plans utilise all available resources including relevant support services (sport science, medicine and conditioning) and travel to relevant domestic and international tournaments as required. The Youth Head Coach will also work with the General Manager to recruit suitable student-athletes, mentor the team of coaches in JDS, SWS and YTS and establish good relationships with stakeholders such as STTA’s High-Performance Team. The candidate for Youth Head Coach must have experience in leading and mentoring a team of coaches.
